Sorry, I didn't think to link the eBay sale here. It's sold today, as I had to keep the auction short to meet some personal commitments.

I'm sure there are some other resources, but I found a bit of good information about modifying the CASKA Windows software over on the Mazda forum...

CASKA GPS Resource Thread - Mazdaspeed Forums

Still not sure which unit I want..

It's the Toyota OEM fascia, intended for use with their aftermarket nav/radio, the TNS510. It is a perfect match for the original dash, both in colour and texture. The downside is that it's expensive and is a non-standard size. The opening is 200mm wide by 100mm high, which is OK for these Chinese head units, but is 20mm too wide for a standard double DIN head unit.

Metra do an infill kit that allows a double DIN head unit to fit this bigger opening, though, which seems to work reasonably well, although it's not as tidy as I would like on the Kenwood I now have installed.

PaJa--Sounds like you replaced a factory JBL system with a China HU. The factory JBL includes bluetooth. Is there a way to use the factory mic?

So, based on this long thread, after the installation is over, you would rather have a name brand unit.. Pioneer or Kenwood..
is that right? I need a unit in my wifes new Mod II that will work.
nav, ipod, backup camera, bluetooth with downloaded contact list, dvd. non-motorized face.

The bluetooth function is inside original FM/CD unit. The chinese HU controls and it is connected to the external, under seat, amplifier. The OEM MIC is an active/amplified one, so I placed the passive microphone close to the rearview mirror and wired it to HU along headliner, A pillar, as visible on pics couple pages of this thread back or in my gallery.

It is a price/quality game. The chinese HU costs me 1/3 of Pioneer/Kenwood EU price. Brand names have their own problems as well. The production quality, based on my observations, is fine. easy installation and integration. WinCE applications need some improvement definitely - mostly AM/FM and MP3 ones. The GPS hardware, Navigation SW, BT, DVD music/video, backup camera are w/o compromise - they are doing what they are suppose to do.

yeh, I have been reviewing the brand names, and they seem to have as many problems.. radio and mp3, backup, bluetooth and nav will be big for wife,

backup, bluetooth and nav for me. I generally turn off the radio everytime I get into the car.

Some of the posters in this thread live in Europe. Those are the posters who are buying the Chinese HU for 1/3 the cost of an aftermarket unit. Qualir ships free to Europe, not to the United States. The units Qualir suggest for the Prius cost 458 or 498. Shipping is around $60. Units from companies like Kenwood, JVC etc cost more in Europe then in the United States.

You can buy an aftermarket unit in the United States for a lot less then you can in Europe. 6th Avenue Electronics is selling an Alpine unit (no bluetooth) for $400. Double DIN units are widely available for $600-$1000 if you shop. You might as well look at grey market units. Warranty service on a Chinese HU is likely to be harder then getting service from the seller.

    I did some research:
Chinese HU--You won't need a harness (save $5-$10), won't need a dash kit (save $20) and won't need a steering wheel control adapter ($50). Easier install.

Advantage of mainstream brand--You can add options that aren't (currently) available on the Chinese HU units. SAT radio controlled by the HU. Same with HD radio. Traffic for the GPS. Unless I'm missing something the Chinese HU are coming with maps that are either pirated or are intended to be more of a demo. One of the sites says something like the maps were downloaded from the internet and decrypted. That's the reason the sites say you can't upgrade the maps. You're not eligible for upgrade pricing. Looks like you're getting maps that are at least a year old. People who aren't planning on "aquiring" maps vis P2P should add the cost of buying a current map.

Buy a unit from Cruchfield (even refurbished) and you'll get the wiring harness and face plate. You can return if if it's DOA. You can call and speak to a tech who speaks English if you have any install questions or issues. There are other vendors that also give good service.

I'm not sure if the cost savings, for most US customers, is enough.

Sounds like you don't care about SAT, HD etc. Unless you want integrated traffic you might be happy with a Chinese HU.

had one in my hands last week, testing it out.. local guy selling..
two things I wanted it didn't have.. 1 download phone contact list..
and voice dial, altho the phones (Blackberry) have it..
on my work phone due to security restrictions, the darned thing keyboard locks every 15 mins.. what a pain.. can't dial while locked..

this also was one of the motorized face units.. and for my wife was looking more simple.. the avic-x920bt starts to be more interesting..

I can't tell if either/both of the dash install kits support a flush face install like the current dash, or have a small setback.. (the toyota adapter has a setback)..

Are there any Chinese units wired to support the JBL sound system in a Prius III?

I don't know if the US JBL is different to the European JBL, but the answer is that the unit I bought worked fine with the JBL system in my Prius T4. All I needed to do was add one wire to a connector to enable the under seat mounted JBL amp to turn on, a really easy mod. Without this mod the front door speakers don't work, as they are driven by the amplifier on JBL equipped models.

Others have reported that the JBL system in US cars might be different and need a special adapter, but I've not been able to compare the two wiring diagrams to see if this is actually the case or not. If it is, then it seems odd that they use a totally different JBL installation between European and US models, but stranger things have been known to happen in the world of international product variation.

I didn't find the auido schematics difference between US and EU models. Jeremy has a JBL external amplifier and I have Fujitsu-Siemens one, but both supply audio to front door spearkers and they are switched on by white wire from HU, nothing else.
AFAIK - there are differences for Korean models.
BTW - The Techstream OBDII service software has an options for Korea models as well.
