Anyone go to drive-in theaters (movies) in your Prius?

I left the car in ready mode, load up the park pawl by applying the park brake, apply power in drive then press park. By doing this you hardly feel the engine start and stop. I run the heater or air conditioner while sitting at the drive-in and sit in the back seat with a black blanket over the dash and front seats right forward. Volume adjustments can be made with steering wheel controls.

    LUXURY!!

I should add for those who don't know me, I have a 2004 model but the same applies to a 2010.

Yes, we have seen several movies in our 2010 Prius already (and they are all double features where I go).

I brought an extra blanket, (to cover the bright dashboard), and turned off the navigation. The only thing I hated was that when I left (after having just reset my trip-ometer), was see my mileage at 17 mpg!!!!. That said, on the drive home, it went back to 44, and was back in the mid fifties by the next day, whew!... :p

I've also done this in both the summer and the winter, with no ill effects. I will try the 'aussies' trick of the parking brake, as the engine cycle was very obvious in the slow scary parts of the movie.. My wife almost jumped into my lap...

Outside of Chicago, about 30 miles west, in the town of 'West Chicago' is 'our' Drive-In Theatre (Welcome to CASCADE DRIVE-IN) Does anyone know of any others in the Chicago Area?

taken my Prii a few times as well. Parked backwards on the front line open the hatch and fold the back seats.I too have to try the power mode next time. The drive-in I go to have double features too and they are first day release movies. They only cost $7 for adults and $4 for kids.
And oh I go to C U at the movies in McHenry,IL.

All the drive-ins I've know of are gone--either replaced by a multi-plex, or permanently converted to a flea market.

Unfortunately, we are rapidly entering a time where the majority don't know what a drive-in movie was.

I have great memories as a child of it being a real treat...but we have come to a place where movies can now be played on screens in the headrests of vehicles.

I'm afraid, I won't have to worry about how to watch Drive-In movies in a Prius. And that's ashame.

All that's left in Portland is an aging unworking neon sign where one used to be.

You do have a drive-in theater about 25 miles SW of Portland, in Newberg: NEWBERG Movies - 99W Drive-In, Twin Cinemas, Cameo Theatre

They offer two movies for $8 (adults)... Maybe you will be able to worry about it. If you end up going, let us know how it was!

man i wished i read this before watching movies at a drive in in NY state (transit drivein) just this weekend.

The Transit Drive-in Theatre - serving Lockport, Western New York, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls!

interestingly enough one of the movies i watched was "The other guys" which starred a red G2 prius (with ferell and wahlberg as co-stars haha). i commented on the major role of the prius in a G2 thread. i used our radio for one whole movie, with the power turned "off". afterwards, the battery seemed dangerously low.

i was raised on drive in movies. very fond memories, lajamas, pillows and especially the snack bar! :D but unfortunately, ours are all gone to shopping malls and housing developments. they were already gone in the 80's and 90's when we raised our kids. although, i think there is one at the far end of cape cod, good for vacationers but a bit of a ride for us.:(

Yes. Two movies for the price of 1 admission.

    1. Turn car off
    2. Put emergency brake on the left side all the way down with left foot
    3. Turn lights off from Auto (we have DRL in Canada)
    4. Turn car on, set A/C to minimum
    5. Turn on radio

Last step is optional - it depends if you're there to watch the movie or not. ;)

I see it's been a while since anyone replied here, but I have a 2013 Prius Plug-in and was wondering if the same rules apply, beings that I don't see that anyone has spoken about it since 2010. Forgive me because I don't know the technical terms, but if I fill the battery that I can go 62 mph for about 12 miles on and then take it to the movies, would that make a difference in whether I can keep the car off and just run accessories (if I can figure out how to do that with this smart car). An I don't understand what the Aussie refers to as "load up the park pawl." I understand that it is engaged when you put a car in Park, but I don't know what loading it up means? Thanks for reading.

Yeah, worked great. Since half (or more) of the speakers are dead I ran the car, and the radio plus AC. Very comfy, minimal fuss and minimal gas used. Definitely bring something to cover the dash. :)

I have one of the last drive ins left around and soon to close they will need to upgrade their system and spend $250k I don't think this family owned drive in will be able to fund it! I guess the movies coming out will not play on the old systems........... :barefoot: New technology is killing the old drive ins

You may be surprised by searching this site for a drive-in near you. You can search by state, zip code, links to the current showings and if open or closed. I found 4 that are still open in my small population state!

I haven't been to the Cascade since I was 10. We saw Jurassic Park. That was awesome, I've been meaning to go back.
