    Hi all,
I feel stupid asking this question but I have done a search of the forums and can't find anything like what I am about to ask. Also don't have any other Prius owners locally to ask. And well the local Toyota dealer can't even spell Prius so no point asking them.

I have had my 2006 Gen 2 for over a year but only just noticed that if you put it in reverse and take your foot off the break it accelerates to about 6km/h (3.7 mph)...No gas peddle required. But if you put it in drive it basically just sits there... maybe inching forward but nothing like it does in reverse. Is this normal? for a Prius or is just my car?

    Thanks in advance

    Bruce

Yep that's pretty much how mine behaves Bruce. I hardly ever have to use the accelerator pedal in reverse, only the brake pedal.

It is by design. And it is sort of "normal" in automatic transmission vehicles. Rarely do I ever use the gas/go pedal in reverse in any non-manual car. Put it in reverse and just tame the speed with the brake.

The "creep" (forwards in drive) is also by design to act like a normal car.

They could have very well made it do neither, but they chose to make the car as close to any other car out there as possible to ease the public's mind that fears change. As such, it works like normal even though there is nothing normal about it.

I would relate this to the QWERTY keyboard. It was done on typewriters because of neccessity, humans could type too fast for the mechanical levers. QWERTY was one of the least efficient patterns, and slowed people down so the mechanical parts could keep up. Switch over to keyboards or even electronic typewriters and the pattern stuck because it was (and is) normal. Sure you can switch to better alternatives like DVORAK, but then you are the weird one...

Maybe someday we will have 0 go pedal depression means 0 acceleration, but I doubt it will be anytime soon.

Thanks for the replies, a long as I am not going mad or have a weird car.
Funny I can't remember my last(Auto) car doing it but it must have. Not even sure why this behavior suddenly struck me today. Thanks again.
