Just saw it on CNN, too. Thought it was kind of odd, seeing as the story seemed to surface overnight. Any confirmation of this, or what the "real" extent of the recall is?

    *Edit*

Ah, I got ahead of myself. There is relevant discussion occurring in this thread.

It appears to be all Prius.

"The vehicles involved in the Toyota service action are from the 2004 and 2005 model years. About 75,000 of them are in the United States and 70,000 in Japan."

It appears you can either wait for a letter from Toyota or just go to the dealership.

I imagine there will just be a software upgrade, nothing special, that will correct this problem. Hopefully be in and out in under 30 minutes.

Well, I'm due for an oil change here in a week anyway, so sure, what the heck.

Can you source this please? I don't want to make an unneccesary trip to the dealer if I don't have to.

    Sure :)

Best thing to do though is call the 800 number and give them your VIN

They can tell you ALL the things that apply to your car.

That is in Japanese and I don't want to install the Japanese language pack mainly because I don't know where my Windows XP disc is.

The only other recall I can find is for the brake lights for the 2004.

Okay, at this point there are like 5 parallel threads on this same topic...

and I've already confused myself as to which one I'd posted in previously,
and fired a followup into a different one. I suggest we pick ONE of
the above to continue discussion, and let the others terminate here.
How about the first of these, entitled "The Official Prius SSC50P
Campaign Doc", which seems to have the most hard info about it?
    That's http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=11470

I think I was actually the first person to post about the official recall. I saw the story on Google News five minutes after it was released then I immediately posted here. So telling me there are 5 parallel threads is silly since I was the first to break the recall notice.

I was at a dealers this morning and mentioned this to the Tech and he said that they had not heard anything from Toyota as yet. Then he pulled it up on his computer and it had just came in. He checked my VIN and my Prius is included. Ir was manufactured in late 2003 and I bought it January of 04. Have not had the problem. Mine is due for replacement of both the engine and hybrid ECU's as well as the grease thing.

Toyota has had 60 cases out of 75,000 cars of the cars shutting down for no reason. Its gonna be a software upgrade and it has not been released to the dealers yet (this is all hear say). You should receive a letter from Toyota explaining how arrange for the update (free of charge). I checked TIS (toyota Information System) Thursday and the recall wasnt there yet (i can see our letter we are gonna get, the dealers letter and step by step what the tech has to do to fix it), so if you call your dealer I am sure they have heard of it (it been on every Tv station), but have not yet gotten the software needed for the update. From what i hear it is 04 models and early 05, but who knows until its released from Toyota. It will be a certain vin number range for the 05's (if what i heard it true). I work for Toyota warranty, but had training on Friday so i might have missed it if it was released then. Soon as i see the recall i will post.

Be happy you bought a Toyota and they will step up to the plate to fix a problem (cough chrysler <_< )
