I just bought an 05 that has the 5.1 disc, unforunately, my new home subdivision does not exist on this version.
I have read that the 05 screen resolution limits the upgrade because the new discs run much higher res.
    Is this true?
WHat is the newest verison i can run in my 05?

You can run the latest versions, if you're willing to front the money to Toyota. Mine is running 8.1 at the moment, and has been for almost a year.

    8.1 or
    9.1
and I's there someone or someplace I get them (besides the spendy dealers)
    and will copys work?

The difference between 8.1 and 9.1 is fairly minor there are other threads with links to the list of changes. 8.1 will be cheaper to find as some of those who have upgraded to 9.1 may sell their old disc.

Beware of copies. The generation 5 Prius nav (unlike other Toyota models) does not seem to be able to read burned discs regardless of the claims of the seller. Only the OEM pressed discs will work. If you do buy a copy make sure you have a solid guarantee (since you will most likely be returning it) and ask if they have tested it in a Prius. Just because it works in a Camry or Lexus does not mean it will work in a Prius.

I found a fellow through the internet who sells the most recent version for $80, and one generation earlier for $60. He seemed able to supply the discs required for the different Prius years. I presume these are pirated copies, and so will not publish details in this thread.

I got the Prius Nav Gen5 9_1_464210-1380 files and for my 2006 Prius and have now burned many coasters. I am using the Verbatim 2.4x and 8x blanks.

Even worse, my Prius came with a 5.1 DVD. I had purchased a 7.1 which was working fine until I loaded one of the 9.1 coasters. The 7.1 no longer works. The 5.1 is working.

I don't know why this happened.

Were the Prius Nav Gen5 9_1_464210-1380 files the correct version for the 2006 Prius?

updateRe: Upgrading Nav DVD for my 2006 (Gen 5 NAV)

    Here is an update.
I got the oem 7.1 to work again.
The various 9.1 burned dvds do not work.
    Here is what I did.
    1. Remove dvd from drive.
    2. Power off Prius.
    3. Remove all 4 connectors to the Prius DVD drive. One of those connectors is the power connector. Replace connectors.
    4. Power on Prius and put the 7.1 oem into drive.
    5. Screen now reads: System updating. It did not do this before cables removed.
    6. After a while the data is read and all is well.

If I try this procedure with the 9.1, it does display "System updating" and then fails to read the data. I then had to reset the cables to load the 7.1 oem correctly. The 5.1 original that came with the car seems to always work, even after putting in a 9.1.

There is something strange about the firmware "system updates" on the 9.1 and the 7.1. Maybe it was just a bad set of 9.1 files.

I am waiting for the 10.1 to appear. If the price is reasonable, I will buy one on ebay.

Rant: The Toyota price for an update dvd (>$200) is just ridiculous. Insane. Garmin will sell me an entire nav system with free lifetime updates for the same $200 or so. If Toyota sold the update for a reasonable price, like <=$50, then we would all buy one and not bother with torrents and burners.

FYI : To anyone still trying to burn the most recent Gen 5 v9.1 DVD.
    I have a 2010 Highlander. Gen 5 Nav System.

I made a copy of my DVD to back it up on the first try with no problems. I used DVD Fab to save/write the files. The key was to check a box under Settings>DVD/Blue-Ray>Write in DVD Fab for "Set booktype to DVD ROM"

P.S. Gen 5 v10.1 just came out this month.

I just purchased the Gen5 V 10 from my dealer for $199. I installed it in less than one minute this morning. It is replacing my original disc V 4.0 from my 2006 Prius. So far, it seems to have everything I have looked up (from my long list of "street, address, not found" that I have compiled over the years.). I know it cost quite a bit, but I was tired of relying on my husband's Iphone. I also realize that it can't do everything, but for me, it should be fine.

Does anyone know if the release notes for V10.1 have been posted online anywhere yet? I would like to take a look at what has been updated before I decide to purchase.

If they are somewhere around on the web please post a link.

    Happy driving,
    Chris

My 06 works with the factory 5.1 disc, a burned 5.1 backup, and a burned 5.1/7.1 hybrid disc with no issues.

However, I did find that if I burned on the LG DL drive in my system, or read from the Sony, it didn't work. Reading on the LG and burning on the Sony is the combo that finally worked for me.

I'm using Office Depot DVD+R DLs, item # 721208, and no, I haven't used a util to identify their true maker.

    loading.kwi 5.1 - 25,317,376 bytes
    loading.kwi 7.1 - 121,477,120 bytes
    loading.kwi 9.1 - 35,854,336 bytes

Interesting how the 7.1 is fricking HUGE, yet substituting the 5.1 works fine. And the 9.1 is back to a "normal" size.

I might try making a 5.1/9.1 or 7.1/9.1 hybrid to see if it works.

As I posted last week, I just my disc Gen 5 from the Dealer. After travelling to Northern Virginia near Dulles airport this past weekend, I found it indispensable. It had streets on it that were not on Google Earth, MyNavigator (on my cell phone) or my husband's IPhone maps. Of course, my last version was the one that came with my 2006 Prius, but overall, it was worth every penny. We were the only ones in the wedding party that were able to find all the required venues over a four-day period without getting lost.

Just upgraded my 2007 Prius to Gen 10.1 (first DVD upgrade). With the instructions on PriusChat and a purchase on eBay, it was (a little) cheaper and a 5 minute job!

Can't tell how different things are, but it's nice not to push "I Agree" each time I use it!
