I received an order of the tray from The Prius Cubby free of charge. With that disclosure out of the way, I am posting my impression of it. I have the Front Cargo / Purse Tray that is sold at the Prius Shop. This impression is based on my experience with both of the trays.

The first thing I noticed was how light the Car Cubby tray was. It is strong yet very light, lighter than the plastic tray. The low weight does not make it feel cheap. It felt and looked like a high quality machine-made product. As I opened the box, a hand-written message (appears to be) was the first thing I saw. The packaging was nicely done with high quality glossy installation instruction and a business card.

Here are pics of the two trays side by side.

The first thing I noticed was the lack of velcro underneath the tray (like the one sold at Prius Shop). My immediate concern was the movement of the tray as it would sit on the carpet material. After installing it, I found some play as there are gaps. The gap was probably caused by the previous tray. I remembered having to push / force it in to fit. I will try it on my friend's Prius to confirm this.

This is how it looks with the cup holder and the "secret drawer" opened.

Top view when the secret drawer fully extended and the cup holder collapsed.

One of the annoying thing with the previous tray was with the rectangle shape foam takeout box, especially if two are stacked on top of another. My takeout order would fall off during the turns and I end up hanging it on the hanger (by the handle above rear windows). That would prevent the spills but it did not look good and made noise while swinging.

The Car Cubby to the rescue! I was able to squeeze in my takeout (two orders and a soup on top). The bag did not tip over, during my drive home.

This shot shows how well the tray blends in.

When ordering, simply enter [email protected] under "Add special instructions to the seller". That will give me $2 referral. :D

Thanks for the nice review! I tried two of the PriusChat Shop trays and eventually returned them. The first one came too small, they sent the second one which was slightly larger but still too small - leaving a gap in the carpet area. They seemed to be hand made. The customer service was very good though: e-mails promptly answered, prepaid return envelop provided and full refund quickly credited.

From the photo the Prius Cubby tray has more substantial side walls than the PriusChat Shop tray. So it should work better. Now the only question left is how do the rest of us each get one free of charge as the OP did? :D

It is definitely a better and well designed tray. The shape of the front of the tray "cups" around that plastic tower of the lower dash. This prevents the tray from tilting.

I should have taken these pictures prior to my first post. The reason for the gap was due to the length of the previous tray. I took two pictures with both of them stacked from different angles.

If you don't own any tray product, the Car Cubby should fit perfectly. If you are upgrading, be warned.

My friend with the 2006 is going to Europe for two weeks. I have two others with 2005 and 2009 so I'll try the Car Cubby in their car next time I see them.

Thanks! I actually didn't know that there was another option - I have the original tray thingy, from PC shop.

I've not had an issue with it yet, but it's nice to know that there is a better-looking, higher-sided option out there.

Lunch order from the Deli. Two 16 oz drinks and two sandwiches. This tray works well.

I just ordered a Car Cubby and they are offering a 10% discount to members of Prius Owner Groups. I know 10% isn't a big deal on a $20.00 purchase but meh every penny counts... to the next mod :D Ryan

Is the cubby surface textured or smooth?

It is smooth and it has texture as well. It is light yet strong. I have never seen this material before.

The Car Cubby is very lightly textured - very similar to the texture of the black plastic on your glove compartment box.

    Cheers,

Got it Thursday. Very fast shipping and super easy installation. It really holds a lot. We went to the library yesterday and it held all our books and DVDs. Great little gadget.

Thanks for the write-up. Looks good. Since I had some "extra" money in my PayPal account, I ordered one. The ordering process was super easy and the 10% discount was nice too.

How is the fit for you? I have not gotten together with my friend to try it.

I just received mine and tried it out. I didn't have a tray before, but I still had the gap with the Car Cubby. Even though I have the gap, it stays put in general. I really like it, but I probably will put a couple of strips of velcro to make it even more secure.

I've finally ordered one. Occasionally my purse falls out of my other one.

install was super easy. While there is a little wiggle room there's no concern about the Cubby falling off. The velcro is a good idea and may try to add some to the Cubby.
