Any major problem on your Prius after 3 or 4 years later?

    Our Prius is about 6 years old. Major expenses have been tyres and the 12v battery.

    My 2005 is up to 92,000miles only tyres and wipers so far though I have been told I will have to have the rear brake discs changed on next service due to scoring / pitting

    05,06,2-07,08. prii family. Normal regular maintenance nothing expensive. Tires mostly. Kids damage more than the car breaks on it's own.

    Our 2008 had the inverter coolant pump go bad at just over 21k miles. While on the highway the exclamation point popped up on the screen and according to the manual we were to stop driving the car when that particular error popped up (don't remember the exact error) so we had it towed. The dealer fixed it under warranty, and now with ~35k miles on it so far we've had no other unusual issues. I really enjoy driving it, we've taken several very long trips in it and aside from the smallish room for luggage, it is an excellent and comfortable travel car!

    Only major problem after 25K is that I forget it needs gasoline! I've gotten down to the blinking gauge many times...

    Just turned 100,000 on my 06. 3rd set of tires, inverter pump fixed at 70K under warranty. Coolant and plug change at 100,000. Original brakes are fine. That's about it. Great car. It drives just like it was brand new. Never had a car so good.

    I want to pull the trigger on an 04 Prius with ~140k. Are there any specifics I should look out for or should I really be looking for a Prius with less miles? I've been lurking around and see some Prius' are good for 200k.

    My 08 is at 36,500 miles.
    Only issue for me was the crappy tires the car came with.
    once worn out, bought Michelin Hydro edge. What a difference in ride, handling, and braking. Haven't had them in snow yet, but anything has to be better than the tires the car came with.

    Did buy a set of winter blades.
    Everything looks and works good. Just did a complete underneath inspection while changing my oil. I have a lift in my garage, so thats easy for me. nothing shows any indication of pre-mature wear or corrosion. But every time I'm underneath I use a can of clear spray paint on all fasteners to keep them shiny, and corrosion free.

    Double check the 12V battery (that's the normal car battery). If it hasn't been replaced yet, it might be on its way out so get someone to check the health of that. Other than that, if the service records are all there and clearly marked, then it should be a safe buy.

    Note that if you're in a place that gets intense heat (which I don't think Chicago gets but just in case), check the rear brake light housing. The black plastic is prone to melting under intense heat (we're talking Arizona 100°F kinda of heat). Under more moderate climates, it holds up well.

    1. Have the car inspected by a Prius tech at a local Toyota dealership. The front struts and rear shocks are probably bad and that will cost ~$2K to replace at a dealer. Check tire condition. Frequently you will find that the tire shoulders are prematurely worn. The 12V battery may need to be replaced but that is pretty cheap compared to other potential repairs - $200+ if you have the dealer replace it.

    2. Although it is true that "some" Prius have logged 200K miles on their odometers, it is also true that "other" Prius have had expensive failures post-warranty. You can count on four-digit repair bills if anything major happens and you have to rely upon Toyota dealer service. Hence I suggest that you have funds available for that purpose.

    The principle of adverse selection suggests that a used Prius for sale has a higher probability of failure compared to the entire Prius population of similar vintage and odometer readings. (Some portion of the used Prius that are offered for sale are available because the prior owner is aware of a problem.)
