I am posting this in the Gen III forum because the large majority of Prii I saw in Iberia were Gen IIIs.

I just returned from 2+ weeks traveling through Spain and Portugal and saw a lot of Prii, mostly Gen III. Over 50% of them were taxis in each city I saw them in.

I didn't keep a written record of do any statistical analysis, so here's my recollection before my memory fades.

In Bilbao near the northern coast in Basque country there were a few Prii on the streets, mostly Gen III taxis. I rode in one in San Sebastion on the northern coast. While out and about in Bilbao and San Sebastion, I noticed several Prii an hour.

In Madrid, Gen IIIs were common, mostly used as taxis. On the main boulevards a Prii spotting every couple of minutes or more often was the norm. A significant percentage of taxis were Prii, but still under 10%. Considering they were primarily Gen III they are catching on fast now.

I saw quite a few in Seville, but not nearly as many as Madrid, they still weren't rare though.

In Lisbon Portugal there were a few, not rare, not real common.

In Porto Portugal they were rare.

Fuel price for regular was about €1.20/liter which is about US$6.30/US Gallon at US$1.40/€

Shame you didn't make a note of the price of diesel to compare!

You'll find that in countries where diesel is equal to or cheaper than petrol, that Prius are becoming more common than previously. Whereas in France where diesel is significantly cheaper than petrol, you will find a Prius to be rather rare.

Also, as I and other European forum members have already stated - diesel is no longer the be all and end all it once was. To comply with stricter emissions legislation they are much more complicated than 10 or 15 years ago. As such reliability is not what it was and they can be rather expensive to fix when they do go wrong - dual mass flywheels, high pressure diesel pumps, injectors and the dreaded diesel particle filter issues (certain manufacters only).

Good point. The difference wasn't large. IIRC, diesel was about 5% cheaper than the cheapest gasoline.

Would love to see pics of Gen III Prius Taxis in Iberia.

In Portugal is €1.38/liter. That's 20cents of euro more than diesel liter.
That is why you have not seen as many as in Spain.

Another link said "In most countries the price of diesel is about 25 percent less than that of gasoline. In the UK and Spain, however, diesel costs virtually the same as"

Does spain have a prominent auto manufacturer that makes diesel ? I know France and Germany do.

The largest auto manufaturer in Spain is Seat (Seh'-aht) which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group. They make a lot of diesels, with VW TDI engines AFAIK.

My impression was that the most common taxis were Skoda (A Czech car company owned by VW that also uses VW TDI engines, and Citroen. The Citroen they use is shaped a lot like a Prius. The police in Madrid primarily drive Citroens too.

Since Spain is part of the European Union, new cars from within the EU are readily available and what sells best is based on what the locals prefer to buy.

You can check fuel prices in EU here:
Super 95 octane (EU standard) and Diesel.

    They are updated weekly, AFAIK.

Those are, obviously price in €/L, which means that you need to multiply those values by 5.3 to get the US gallon $ price, at 1.4€/$ x-rate (1 gallon = 3.785L*1.4€/$ = 5.3 - right?).
    Yes, it is *not* cheap.
You can also see that the difference in price between diesel and gasoline is not that much anymore and that gets offset by higher purchase price of diesel cars and very often higher taxes (due to supposedly higher pollution - but in fact is simply to gain back what states loose at the pump, IMHO). Unless you drive a lot on highways or suburban, to get a diesel or a gasoline car in EU, regardless of engine size, it makes no more difference - it is going to cost a lot in anycase... ;)

With any luck I will be in Barcelona, and maybe a few other places in Spain, in a few weeks.
I will try to add to everyone's observations here, as I don't see posts reporting on this area.

Back from a couple of weeks in Barcelona. northern Spain along Costa Brava and west to Bilbao, and back through southern France (because the GPS in our rental car directed us that way):

Saw a bunch of Prius taxis in Barcelona, and as I saw them very quickly, it was hard to classify them all accurately. The easiest thing for me to pick out--the color of the rear spoiler--was useless, because the taxis had uniform coloration, always black on the rear spoiler. But I'm pretty sure that I saw both Gen IIIs and Gen IIs--some of the spoilers looked flat enough to be Gen III, and some curved enough to be Gen II.

There were a number of "civilian" Prii, and I saw a Parking Police Prius, whose occupant was handing out tickets.

Outside of Barcelona, Prii were pretty sparse--OP saw some in Bilbao, but I missed them. In fact, I thought Toyotas as a whole were less common than I expected, and much less so than in the US. (The thing I was surprised to see a bunch of was Jeeps!)

And I have some info on diesel prices--I paid about 1.25 to 1.29 Euros per liter for diesel to put in the red BMW 320d that I lucked out to get--first time I've driven a BMW or a diesel. I seem to remember it was a bit more expensive per liter than gas, but not much.

I saw three at once at the train station just last weekend.

And, the two Manhattans that I know of, one in New York and the other in
Kansas, are both in the US(A). ;)

I was in NY as well as Spain on my recent trip, and DID see at least one Prius taxi in Manhattan.

Also rode for the first time on a NYC Hybrid Bus (not sure of manufacturer). I'm not sure what kind of hybrid it is either--but it felt to me like the ICE was always on.
