Got rid of our Prius-kinda sad

    Sold the Prius today, it's a little bittersweet. we purchased a Mini S with the supercharger in it (one HELL of a ride, this thing is FAST!) We still have our other 04 so I'll still be on here from time to time. Thanks for all the help : )

    exactly. there was no other car that could sway me except the coop. everything else doesn't really do much for me

    I guess I may have got rid of it to then. I have never heard of a Prius with those kinds of problems? Good luck with your Mini. I had one around 1964! H

    New steering rack? Was it in a collision? What other maintenance was needed?

    In any case this wasn't really about money. One can't buy any new car for $6500.

    Which is why we are keeping our other prius with 103,000 miles on it :)

    Have fun with the Mini for a few thousand miles and get out of it. The engine water pump is driven by the supercharger at the rear of the superchanger. The water pump gear eats the supercharger gear and that gear is not replaceable. It's time get a new, not rebuilt, superchanger for $3k just for the part. This can happen at less than 60K miles.

    I don't know if this problem was ever fixed in the newer supercharged cars. These cars are a blast and a maintencance nightmare. This may be why the new ones are turbos. This is just one of the many problems. There the $3K clutch jobs and the repeated replacement of suspension bushings. If you get the CVT trans, they don't hold up either and cost $4K for just the part.

    There are also some superchargers with 150k+ miles on them. I plan to take good care of it

    Sweet! Nice colour too.

    I'm more of the standard Cooper person...mostly because a Cooper S (new) can easily run into the $40k range before taxes up here. We also have a MINI Classic model slotted below the Cooper but it's kinda basic.

    Regarding how I know this about the Mini is that I have a friend in the European car repair business. I know repair shops tend to see the worst case scenarios and there can be problems with any make and brand. There can be problems that are outside the statistical normal. That being said, my friend keeps seeing problems with the Mini, and expensive problems, that he doesn't see in most cars until much higher mileage and many more years of age.

    I'm glad to hear that there are some supercharged cars with the original superchanger at 150k miles. It was very disappointing to hear about the early failures.

    The Mini is surely a fun car to drive. Dan
