I've been a reader on this site for a while, and did some searching but didn't see any threads with this same problem (the MFD failure threads seem to have different symptoms).

I have an '08 prius, no Nav or JBL, with a little over 50k miles on it. My radio and MFD have recently stopped working. The MFD screen is off and unresponsive. The buttons around the MFD are lit, but pressing them doesn't do anything. Same for the radio, it's off and won't turn on - the buttons are lit and pressing them does nothing (except the button to eject the CD works). The steering wheel controls for the radio have no effect either.

So at this point, I have no radio and no MFD. My main concern is the radio since I spend about an hour and a half in the car everyday and not having the radio is a giant pain. The MFD is more of a minor annoyance, since I can still control the temperature and AC with the steering wheel.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be/how to fix it? I'd rather not have to replace the MFD given the posts I've seen on here about the cost. I'm fine with replacing the stereo head unit if I need to and if that would fix the problem.

check the fuses? Perhaps a power plug got disconnected?

Any 3rd party mods to the car? Does the A/C work?

I visually checked the fuses that seemed to be relevant to the MFD and radio, none looked blown. I had a TOY-SC1/Sirius radio attached (had it since I got the car) and I've disconnected it to see if it was the problem. The A/C is working.

I assume that to check a power plug, I'd have to at least partially disassemble the dash (at least take out the glove box and vents that I had to take out to attach the Sirius radio)?

I would check ALL the fuses, as there are many that are non-obvious that feed power to the MFD circuits. There is also a small blue relay that is located behind the far left A/C vent. I've seen these fail and create this problem.

To check the relay, pull the left vent out. (it snaps straight out, but may take a little prying to get it started.) look in the opening toward the direction of the brake pedal, and you will see a little blue rectangular cube back in there about 8 inches. It will pull straight out of the body ECU, and reveal 4 terminal slots. Take a small paperclip and bend it in a U-shape so it will fit into the 2 largest holes at the same time. Wrap it in tape except for the last 1/2" and then shove it into the connector, making sure to get the clip ends in the holes. The MFD should then light up if it was in fact a bad relay. You will then have to replace the relay, as the paperclip will keep the MFD on even w/o the ignition being on.

If this doesn't work, and you've checked all the fuses and connectors, you probably have a failed MFD.

I'm willing to repair it for a nominal fee if that is indeed the problem. I've repaired 4 so far, and they were all relatively easy fixes. Though you'd have to send it to me, and have a hole in your dash while this is being done. It only takes about 10 minutes to remove and you only need a 10mm socket and phillips screwdriver.

Thanks, I'll try checking the relay tonight. If that's the problem, any idea how much a replacement one costs?

A relay? Probably around $20-$40 at the stealer. Someone like Steve (Iamwoody) can probably sell you a used one for a few bucks.

Quick update - so I tried the paperclip, and the MFD & radio are still off, so its not the relay. I'm going to try to pick up a fuse tester later this week and then check all the fuses with it just to be sure.

Be sure to check all the ones under the hood as well.

New problem - after plugging the relay back in, the lights around the MFD and the radio buttons weren't lit. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and they came back on. Now though, after I turn off the car the clock is more brightly lit and the car is repeatedly beeping once I open the door. If I leave the car and close the door its beeping the same way it does when you leave the car running and step out of it with the keys. The only way that it stops is if I unplug the relay again. Does this mean that the problem probably is the relay, or is it something else?
