I had written a bit of a longer post but it somehow got lost and I need to retype. So, I'll keep this one a bit short.

I have a Prius sitting in my driveway after coming home with it for an overnight test drive from the local Toyota dealer. It is a 2007 Barcelona/Tan Touring with Package #6. The car appears to be in great condition, though it has about 65,000 miles. The car has been regularly serviced at this dealership since purchased there new. I have gone through some of the Maintenance Mode diagnostics and there are some codes though they look old. The 12v batter checks out just fine. They could not confirm the tranny fluid had been changed and offered to change it if I buy the car and want that done. They offered the car for $13,8k, reduced from the listed price of $14,995. Certified Preowned gets me basic warranty to 7yr/100k and I have the option to get the extended warranty to cover everything else for the same term for another $980.

So how does this sound? Anything else I should be checking? Is the price good? The car goes back tomorrow or I buy it. Just looking for some quick opinions and thoughts before I decide. I've attached some pics of the codes I saw if anyone can decipher. Thanks.

It sounds alright. I also got mine from a dealer with similar miles. I could have got a slightly lower price with a private sale, but I went with certified S/H from a dealer because I didn't know much about Priuses at the time and thought it would be less risky. Anyway, it's turned out to be a good buy.

Have you compared the price with what's on offer at privates sales. I'm not familiar with what current prices are like in North America.

Thanks for the reply. I did look around at prices on some privately offered cars and I even looked at the blue book retail price and in the end the price they offered me was lower. Now being the skeptic that I am I immediately thought they were looking to unload the car because of some problem. I was willing to pay the higher price for the warranty. I've been a car guy since my teens and worked on and rebuilt them over the years (my current car was a 2006 GTO, which will now stay in the garage for the winter) and while I'm also very technically savvy, I've never worked on a Prius.

So I went ahead and bought the Prius and now I am a Prius owner (YAY!). I am excited about that and yet it doesn't make me giddy like when I brought home my GTO new from the dealer. The Prius has a special purpose which is safe, reliable transportation that gets great fuel economy. I paid half the cost of a new Prius with (almost) the same features. While looking at this car I asked to see a 2010 Prius as well, for comparison. They showed me a IV with solar roof and such and I liked it but my wife didn't. She felt too cramped in the 'cockpit' style driver seat with the huge center console.

Normally I like new cars. Used cars tend to be other people's problems. In addition to the basic warranty provided with Certified Used Toyotas, I paid the extra for the extended warranty that covers nearly everything else besides the powertrain. So now the whole car is covered for 4 years/35,000 miles. More than enough time to shake loose anything that might go wrong. So I'm feeling pretty good all around about the whole deal.

    Ok, first things first:
    Critiques:
    1) your thumbnails are upside down
    2) The only thing that shook loose in your purchase was the cost of the extended warranty. :( If anything was going to go wrong, it would have during the first 65k miles. For a cert. pre-owned, an extended warranty is $ down the drain...I did the same thing on my '04 with 48.5k on it, so you're not alone.

    Pluses:
    1) you got a great car at a decent price.
    2) Expect it to last another 100-150k miles (at least!) with not much more than normal maintenance and tires. If you DO have a major repair after warranty, it should be equivalent to (or less than) what you'd spend on a non-hybrid (tranny/engine, etc)...just different parts.

Good luck and welcome to the forums! :welcome:

Thanks for the followup. Yes, I saw the pics were upside down after I posted them. I didn't rotate them after I took them off of my phone.

As for the warranty, it is what it is. I could have skipped it, but figured at least for this go-round It might end up paying for itself. If not, oh well. That's what insurance is...a gamble. If something big does break and I didn't have it, I'd be cursing myself for not getting it.

As for the other posts about lower mileage cars for the same price, the only thing I can say to that is they are in the right place at the right time. There are not many Touring #6's around here for this price range so I think I did OK. I did manage to get the dealer to throw in a new DVD for the NAV system since the one that came with the car was 6.1, so that's another $200 I don't have to spend. In the end I think I got a decent deal and enough peace of mind to feel good about it for a few years. The car has been great this weekend. We've used it to run all over the place to kids soccer games, errands, whatever. The kids get more of a kick out of it than I do.

Don't let them forget about changing the fluid. And it needs to be "changed," not "flushed" or whatever term a dealer might use. All you do is open a little fill plug, open the drain plug, drain the fluid, close the drain plug with a new crush washer, and then refill it through the fill plug hole with the correct Toyota Type WS fluid, nothing else will do in my opinion, and then of course put the fill plug back. At 65K miles, even if it hadn't been changed it isn't too far past, and if it has, it will still be OK to do, since you don't get 100% of the old fluid out during each change.

If you want to learn just about everything there is to know about a Prius, including how to change the transmission fluid, read what Hobbit has posted, and check his website http://www.techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/ . There are also many threads at PriusChat too that show how to do much of the necessary maintenance.

I don't know if there is time, but it might be worthwhile to check into cancelling the extended warranty. I would tend to agree that the risk of something breaking is less than the price of the warranty. When I bought the Prius, but new, they tried the same thing. I told them, "It's a Toyota, isn't it?" There wasn't much they could say then.

Oh, and I think you'll be very happy with the Prius. You may not be "giddy" yet, but you will really get to enjoy the peacefulness when the engine shuts off either at a light or driving down the road. :D
