First Oil Change

    Hi

    I took our car to the dealer for a separate issue, when they called me they informed me that the car was 6 months old and due for it's first oil change.

    I'm in Vancouver, Canada, I said OK, the car is exactly 6 months old and has 4300km on it. Not used very much. I looked online and found articles saying that Toyota has changed the policy and now the first change wasn't required until 12 months or 10,000miles..

    so why is the dealer telling me it's actually 6months? I then called Toyota Canada. The person on the phone told me it's still 6 months.. that's what they recommend.. so what is it? 12 months or 6 months. I know the service department obviously wants to keep busy, but I'd be very annoyed it they are doing work they shouldn't be doing?

    Anyone have any opinions?

    Since it is the first oil change... no big deal. Good to the initial grinds out of the oil.

    However, the next one could go to 10,000 mile if you use synthetic... not regular oil. It could be the dealer and Toyota are quoting intervals for regular oil which is allowed in Canada I believe.

    If toyota is picking up the tab with the free maintenance then 10k or 12 months. If it's on your credit card they will try to sell you the service whenever. Just had my 5k freebee and all they did was rotate the tires.

    Yeah, I'm trying to figure this out as well. I'm approaching 5K (Miles, of course). Is it every 10,000 Miles with synthetic?

    For us in Canada, Toyota Canada doesn't really give a damn. Here is an extract from some recent corresspondence I received from them:

    "We would like to take this opportunity to mention that Toyota Canada Inc. and Toyota Motor Sales USA are separate business entities..."

    This was regarding the dealership reveiwing the TSB-009810 (Rear brake/wheel squeak), and calling it a fake, and later clarifying that it is 'fake' because it does not apply to Toyota Canada.

    So along the same lines, any changes or updates or TSBs or guidelines that are found and published in USA (or other international Toyota markets) do not apply to us in Canada - and Toyota's verbal excuse for that is that each market is an independent business, and they would only investigate something if they 'have enough complaints' - which, given the relatively smaller size of the Canadian market, will probably never be 'enough' - so the bottom line is that for us, service is still at 6 months/8000 Km.
