    Hello Everyone,
I am a new Prius owner. I just purchased a 2008 with 27k miles yesterday, and last night I got the "red triangle of death". My car is currently back at the dealership after a very expensive tow. I only got to drive it for about 4 hours.

Before the break down, I was extremely excited to finally have a Prius, and was really happy with my purchase. I'm still excited about having the car, but I'm also highly disappointed that it broke down the day I bought it! I sure hope this isn't a sign to come! I see that most people love their cars, and I've read that they consistently get high dependability ratings.

Has anyone else had similar this happen?

And by the way, the forum looks to be full of valuable information. I'm happy I stumbled on to it, and I look forward to learning more and more about my car (Once I get it fixed).

Was it still drivable (but towed just to be safe) or was it completely unable to be driven?

It was completely undriveable. The dealership just called me and said that the person that filled it up with gas when I bought it accidentally put a little bit of diesel fuel in it, then filled it the rest of the way with regular gas once he realized he had messed up. He tried to cover it up thinking that it wouldnt hurt anything, but when the car came in, I guess he fessed up. It was the diesel in the tank that messed everything up. They said they drained the tank, refilled it, and cleaned the fuel system -- supposedly its running great now. We'll see when they come to pick me up.

Looks like a great find, except for the diesel bit. It will be OK. H

Wow, that could cost them. Good thing you got the fess'up for future reference. Might this win you some purchase price back? Or maybe a deal killer altogether?
2008 with only 27K is a nice grab tho, hope it really is healthy. Best get the opinion of some of the expert members here.

I see you're in Rome, where did you purchase? Sounds like they are taking care of you, that's a good thing!

I got it at Riverside Toyota in Rome, Ga. The dealership has been great so far. My salesman (Don Davis) has been top notch, and I can tell he is genuinely trying to make everything right. I feel like they are taking care of me, and that is very important considering I was doubting my purchase last night!

    "I don't agree with Ed.
Drive it. Enjoy it." Eat it when it blows up a year from now and the dealer can't figure out what's wrong with it.

The op came on the forum because he's worried about the car.
If it ingested enough D fuel to die & throw the triangle that's way to much for me in my almost brand new car I had one day. If it was an insignificant amount he never would have known about it.

He has the opportunity to get out of the deal. There's no shortage of used low miles Prius out there. Not only would I get out of the deal I'd make the dealer get me another car and then go for a better deal for all my hassle. Thats the right thing for the dealer to do.

But the dealer is hoping this guy doesn't know that. Cue friendly salesman. I want to point this out to him because I hate new car dealers.

This op is one of the main reasons to buy a brand new car. So you don't end up with a used one one thats all jacked up. But if you know its been jacked up and you can bail on it?

    Accidentally put Diesel in it?

I suppose accidents can happen, but that would make me mad.

Plus yes, I'm suspicious because the nozzle sizes on unleaded and diesel pumps are different to avoid this VERY type of happening. You'd have to work very hard to be that incompetent.

Also a 2008 Prius has a gas bladder, it would make me real nervous thinking diesel gas had been put in it and what long term problems that might result in....

Admittedly it might be a totally resolvable problem....but I think I'd want a whole new gas bladder...at least...

Put a "little" into it? What does that even mean? Since the person doing it admitted to initially trying to cover it up? Who knows how much that "little" actually was.

Plus the engine has been run, on this mixture of diesel and unleaded...

Prius is a great car IMO. And it's a bummer, but I think I'd leverage for full replacement of the gas bladder and perhaps for free inclusion of a maintenance warranty...or I'd want out of the deal.

But that's just me. I'm sometimes cynical and paranoid.

Is "blow up" a technical term?

Thanks for the comments and concerns.

Got the car back, and it's running perfectly. After a little research online I'm not very concerned about any long-term damage to my car from the diesel fuel. I took it on a long trip yesterday, and was very pleased. It's so fun to drive!

I cant wait to learn how to optimize my mileage and figure out all the benefits of this awesome car!

It would be interesting to see the size of the gas filler in that Prius. If it's a standard size I would assume the person putting diesel into it would have had to use a funnel. (The diesel nozzle is oversize to prevent dummies from putting diesel into gasoline powered cars.)

I hope that the dealership is not covering up something more serious.

I have a yellow 5 gallon can of diesel in my garage for my tractor. Spout would fit in my Prius filler hole just as easily as the spout on my red 5 gallon can of gasoline.

In North America the pump nozzle at gas stations are different sizes between diesel & gas to prevent what happened to the op.
Its hard to fill diesel into a gas fill hole at a station.

when i was a golf course superintendent in a past life, i hired a guy to mow fairways for the summer. he was the father of the arrowsmith lead guitar player. we had an old for tractor and a 5 gang pull behind reel mower. the first day, he goes to the gas tank to fill it up. he takes the cap off the radiator, which is right in front of the tractor, and obviously the radiator (no grille) and tries to fill the radiator with gas. people are capable of anything. i would be concerned the possible long term affects of diesel in the system unless an expert here was comfortible with the dealers opinion. all the best!:)
