    Hi

Got my new Gen III today after having my Gen II for 3 years. Anyway in my old car i could reset consumption without resetting the trip counter, which i usually used to gauge when to fill up the car. Every 300 Miles, as i was told Gen 2 Gas gauge was not to accurate.

So question, how is the gas gauge on the Gen 3. Can i trust that thing and if not how to i reset consumption like in my old Gen 3 but leave the trip alone. How many miles do you guys go with one fill ? My old Gen 2 averaged around 310 in the summer a little more. Thanks for help

Since the GenIII doesn't have a bladder you probably don't have to worry about it as much. I figure I have about 100 miles or just less than 2 gallons left after 0 MTE.

That's the one thing I don't like in the Gen.3. I used to do the same as you, now I wind up resetting trip a when I get gas and leave trip B for trips. I usually go 400 miles on my Gen 3 before I get gas. The guage is more accurate in the new one.

Check the owner's manual, but I think the display/trip function has a "miles to empty" mode that should be as reliable as the trip odometers. Check it out.

    Happy Motoring,

Yeah it does have miles to empty, but it changes as it fine tunes as you put on more miles, but it is very useful when you get toward the end. At least it's very conservative. I drove 20 miles with it reading 0 miles to empty and still only put in 10 gals., my most ever.

So far (4,000 miles) my gauge has been very consistent. The lowest bar starts flashing at very close to 20 miles to empty unless I go around a corner hard or make a had stop or acceleration someplace between 40 miles and 20 miles to empty in which case it has started flashing as early as 40 miles to empty.

It has taken from 9.5-9.8 gallons at the start of bar flashing/20 miles to empty. Considering the fact that neither gas pumps nor I are capable of filling a tank exactly the same each time, that is very consistent.

It may vary some from car to car, although people who fill their tanks to a few clicks and keep careful records seem to get similar results.

There is only one fuel level sensor in the tank' The bar gauge, onset of flashing and miles to empty all use the same sensor. They are just different computer representations of the same fuel level signal. The miles to empty readout is a combination of fuel level and recent fuel consumption, how recent seems to be a state secret.

When mine hits about 25 miles to empty the last bar starts flashing. It then takes about 9.5-10 gals to fill her up.

Yes, this is my issue. Trying to see how I'm doing with current tank MPG, not each trip. How to do this?

Paprius's method works fine for me. Trip A = tank, Trip B = whatever trip I want to measure. I usually get gas somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 miles.
