Just got a postcard from Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. recommending the 2011 Navigation Map Upgrade version 10.1. The current map in my 2007 Touring is version 6.1.

The price of the upgrade is $199. Is it a good value?

The dealership near me charges $159 I believe. The upgrade took just a couple of minutes after inserting the new DVD.

Value in general is subjective. It's often good to base value on comparables. You can purchase a Garmin or TomTom GPS unit with lifetime maps and traffic for $200 or less. Pros: No address input lockout when moving, can use in other cars, has traffic and lifetime maps. Cons: slightly smaller screen (typically 4.3"), doesn't integrate with factory stereo.

Good money after bad, in my opinion. I received the same postcard - right in the trash. My Toyota GPS is a daily irritant. Last week I used my wife's car for a ~350 mile trip, using my old Garmin nuvi. The nuvi is a 2006 just like my Toyota nav. The Garmin is infinitely superior. I would buy a new Garmin rather than the Toyota update.

I know I may be in the minority, but I find the factory nav very good in my Prius. I did load the newest version, $169 ordered at the dealer, and I like the fact that I no longer have to push something that says I agree b4 it boots. It does contain the latest road changes as best I can tell. I also have several Garmins in my other vehicles and they are the best portable navs out there. The factory big screen is a plus for my old eyes, but I also like the split screen when approaching a turn, the interstate exits and rest stops clearly shown on the split screen with distances, services and restaurants available. I also enjoy not having to worry about theft. When my wife drives one of the other vehicles, she always immediately removes the Garman because she is afraid someone is going to break in and steal it. Besides all this it is much more convenient to use. Ok that's my story and I am sticking to it. Hope everyone has a Happy Christmas!

Thank you Bernie Ferrone. I agree. I own two Garmin units, and they are great. But everything has it's pros and cons. I have really become accustomed to the NAV in my Prius. It is bright, and easy to use (once we read the (manual).

My only complaint is the software: In our town there are streets that have been in existance for 100 years or more .... why are they not shown??? I can understand that new streets will not appear.

Merry Christmas to all ... as well.

Thank you all for the insightful comments so far. I'll definitely shop for price if I upgrade.
