In my faulty narrowmindedness, I tend to imagine that most Prius owners are very liberal politically (save the whales, save the environment, depopulate the earth, etc...). But I consider myself to be very conservative.

The major reason I bought my Prius was to save money on gas. Am I right in my stereotyping that the majority of Prius owners are politically liberals?

My intent is not to belittle or insult anyone, just curiosity, or perhaps to get rid of my sterotype. I enjoy listening to everyone's point of view (regardless of political affiliation), not just those who feel the same way I do. :)

    Inputs?

Economically conservative ... work, pay taxes, don't mooch, save, invest

Politically and socially conservative ... secure the borders. have people compete in global technological business climate 'cause a superpower can't thrive when 1/3 of its young workers want to be movie or sports stars, etc...

Environmentally liberal ... who to believe on climate change? the little naysayers or the EPA, NOAA, USGS, IPCC .... I'll go with the big dogs TYVM.

You are probably correct in that you used the word "most", but definitely not all. As gas prices have risen and the Gen III has been released, I believe the car is going more mainstream as a car that simply delivers great mileage, is reliable, and has a versatile hatchback design. Going mainstream has likely resulted in more conservative owners.

I consider myself to be a conservative, and the reasons I purchased a Prius are a concern over foreign oil consumption, increasingly volatile gas prices, and the technology in the car.

I'm a Conservative through and through but I am also an engineer and love the design and engineering that goes into Prius. I also hate sending money to the middle east and since we cant drill for oil here I say burn as little gasoline as possible. If it makes the libs happy about the environment so be it.

There has been 1-2 polls and the left-right split is 60/40 at most.

The Prius profile is more mainstream than most think (or believe)

We now know that 3 out of every four readers of PriusChat on Christmas Day are conservatives!

Me? Fiscally conservative, socially liberal. And I have the expectation that politicians should be able to compose a coherent sentence and not say things like 'drill, baby, drill'. Lately, these criteria have influenced my voting.

Knowing the expectation of "liberal" that people may attach since I'm driving my gen III, I put a bright red "Tucson Rifle Club" sticker with an endangered species in the crosshairs on just to confuse.

Living in So Cal means we have long commutes to and from work, we bought our Prius in 2005 to save gas and get the carpool stickers. The stickers saved us time by allowing use of the carpool lanes on most freeways, and time is money. I have said in the past we did not buy the Prius to save the whales. If the car helps pollute less, that is a good thing since I don't have an axe to grind with the whales or the environment. It would be safe to say that osama bin loco probably does not like my Prius. I can just picture a corpulent saudi oil executive with his arms folded and his lower lip pouting, with the image of oil tanks in the background....STUPID PRIUS!!! As for liberal or conservative I am middle of the road, because on both sides of the road you have gutters. Being a member of the NRA and practicing firearms safety and tactical training makes me somewhat of a conundrum or anomaly in the typical groups of fellow hybrid drivers. That being said, I would buy another hybrid in the future, but our 2005 Gen II is running great, so another purchase is way in the future for now. At times I have almost registered as an Independent, but continue to be a Democrat. That may change if the Democrats don't get their act together soon.

I'm with you Traci. I picked up a prius yesterday, with fuel savings and reduced maintenance costs in mind. Plus, I'm a gadget freak, so the tech will keep my mind off the lack of power (compared to my previous car).

I'm not sold on man-caused global warming (As I sit here watching snow accumulate in Atlanta on Christmas day for the first time since the 1880's), but the way I see it, what's the harm in conserving our resources? I want to keep this planet beautiful too.

And yeah, now I can say I'm sending less $ to the guys on the other side of the world who are determined to destroy the US.

Ha! I had the same thought.... Would an NRA or Glock sticker eliminate any doubt?

    Neither.

The only three things in the middle of the road are a dead opossum, a yellow streak, and me.

Politics and people are waaaaay to complicated to shove 308 million US residents (some of whom are actually citizens) into two itty bitty little boxes. I vote people---not parties.
I am a Christian, and most of my views are conservative---but I get bashed on what some call "overly liberal"----or "overly conservative", or just plain incorrect views. I pretty much don't really care.
    Examples:
    1. I'm Pro Free Market---anit tarif.
    2. Anit Death Penalty---with rare exceptions. I also like Sheriff Arpio's ideas for prison reform.
    3. VERY Pro border security, but I recognize that you can't deport 10-20 million illegals. The first law of shipboard damage control: Plug the hole---THEN dewater the ship! Give illegals a SSN, then you can't pay them under the table to weed your flower beds....well...OK you can, but they're not going to do it.
    4. Global Warming is real. There used to be an ice age....now there isn't. SUV's weren't around when the ice thawed. We're not the problem...at least not 99.999999999999999% of it. (I rounded down.)
    5. Abortion is constitutionally legal and proper. It's also wrong in 99.9 out of 100 cases, (I rounded up that time) I was born 4 months premature, so I'm probably not impartial. You cannot force a woman to bear a child.
    6. Flat tax. It works. It's fair, and it'll never happen. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
    7. Homosexuality is constitutionally protected and should not be discriminated against in any way. It's also wrong. (see #5) but that's not for me to judge. Christians (like me) don't protest against atheists, agnostics, and other non-Christians getting married. Thus, they have no right to stop gays.
    8. There is very little real poverty in America. Go to Haiti and Africa----then come back and show me real poverty here. If you're hungry in the US----there are three probable causes: chemical dependence, stupidity, or sloth.
    9. Gun control works. I shoot expert in both pistol and rifle (U.S. Navy standards---probably easier than the Corps) I have no heartburn with registration laws however. We register cars, planes, all kinds of things. There should be a national CCP process. This will eliminate the daffy reciprocity laws for folks like me who 'carry' across state boundaries. If the 2nd Amendment were interpreted like the 1st or 4th ---gun ownership would be required in America.
    10. It's MERRY CHRISTMAS....Not happy solstice. It’s an official holiday. Get over it already. Most of the Christmas traditions were borrowed from pagan rituals, and Jesus was probably not born in December, and he didn't have blonde hair and blue eyes---but it's still Merry Christmas in America. I also like reading In GOD we trust on my money…..but forced school prayer is as wrong as prohibiting the same.

    Merry Christmas everybody!!

I will accept the fiscally conservative socially liberal label too. By fiscally conservative, I mean responsible use of taxpayer money not just being stingy.

Economically conservative, but socially very liberal. I used to think of myself as conservative across the board, but I've been pushed further and further left.

I bought my Prius for the great mileage and clever technology. All of the environmental aspects are icing on the cake.

This is my general position as well. As an ecologist, I am very concerned with the environment and do not understand why conservation and wise use of resources need be labeled a liberal issue. Since we rely on the environment 100% for our comfort and survival, it defies logic how some people just don't care about it and even brag about their stance. *shrugs* :)
