Auto-Off Headlight

I haven't tried it but make sure that the interior light switch is on the door setting.

 

I've encountered the same bug with the Auto headlights. Note: Auto headlights are not available on U.S. market Prius cars.

If you leave the switch on Auto and open the driver door, they go out. I once tried the passenger door and they do NOT turn off. Since I rarely have passengers, it's not that big of a deal.

My local dealer claims the THHT can be used to customise Auto headlight settings, like at what light level the headlights turn on. I've been thinking of doing that as when I park in the underground parking the headlights are always turning on.

 

Nope. However, I think the car will beep at you. At least it will if you turn the lights on from off while the car is off and then open the door. Auto off only activates if you power off with lights still on then open door.

Oh, and taking off on Danman a bit, if your lights are on, and you decide to pull over and take a nap, when you power off, the lights WILL remain on, and will NOT timeout. As Dan mentioned, the door has to be opened.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I had auto headlights in my 2001 Highlander, saw "Auto" lights in the Prius user manual, saw the sensor on the dash, and wondered... hmm.. why wouldn't my package 6 (which is the max package, of course..so one assumes it has it all) have auto headlights?

Well, duh, I guess that's because I live in the US. Silly me!

That's not the ambient light sensor. That's the ambient solar heat sensor for the HVAC. The empty slot next to it is where the sensor would be.

I have found out that the audiable alarm (beep/buzzer) to remind one of the headlights when the auto-off is not applicable only sounds with the driver door.

Reminds me of a joke a friend told me. His competitive buddy bragged about his auto-off lights: "My headlights turn themselves off after 5 minutes." His reply: "So do mine, but it takes about 9 hours."

 

In theory you should be able to re-wire the passenger door sensor in with the driver side door sensor. Not the SKS sensor or button, just the door ajar sensor (in the jam). I don't have a wiring diagram but if someone else does they might be able to tell you where those wires run.

You could theoretically do that, but there might be unexpected consequences with that, like SKS knowing the difference between a passenger removing the fob, versus the driver removing it.

OK, on the driver J/B, the violet wire on pin 21 of connector 1D is the driver door courtesy switch, and the brown wire on pin 24 is the passenger courtesy switch.

Word of caution though, the hybrid and immobilizer sections of the wiring diagram also reference the driver courtesy switch.
Also found brake control, key reminder, window control and door lock.
