    Tideland Prius, sorry if I started this new thread for Jan 2011 Fuel Economy Stats (I couldn't find any) - hope you don't mind!

    My first stats for this year - it looks good :)

    Date: 01 January 2011
    Total Dist: 106km / 65mi
    MFD: 4.5L/100km or 52mpg US
    Calc'd: 4.8L/100km or 49mpg US
    Average Speed: 53 km/h or 33mph

    Remarks: 2 passengers, empty trunk, A/C on set on Auto to 21C/70F, nominal tire pressure (2.5/2.4bar - 36/35psi front/rear), 6-10C/43-50F outside temp, following speed limits, ECO mode, a bit of everything - country roads, highway (90km/h max, mainly due to road works).

    The profile is not *exactly* the road I did (1 of 2 very similar legs), but close and gives an idea.

    Took trip from Southern CT to New Hampshire ski resort on third tank of gas over holidays. Had three passengers with ski stuff, averaged between 70 and 75 mph on highways. Trip was 450 miles roundtrip and fuel economy was 48 mpg. Kept gearing in ECO mode.

    Remarks: 3 passengers, fully loaded trunk + couple of bags in rear seats, A/C on set on Auto to 21C/70F, nominal tire pressure (2.6/2.5bar - 37/36psi front/rear), -8C to +5C/18F to 41F outside temp, following speed limits, ECO mode though about 250km in PWR mode, country roads + highway (140km/h max).

    Pakitt,

    Do you guys have ethanol in your fuel over there and if so what percentage? Most of us in the USA have 10%. Really hurts our mileage here.

    From Google Earth (PC/MAC program) - search for directions (unfortunately you cannot tweak the search parameters or add in-between stops) and then in Edit (if I remember correctly) look for the "Show Elevation Profile" command.

    Hi Craig,

    cannot confirm and would need to document myself better, but AFAIK we have 5% standard EU wide and starting 01.01.2011 we have 10% (but 5% is still available since some engines cannot run on 10%). The gas is called E5 or E10.
    I haven't visited a gas station since the introduction of the new E10, so I don't know if E5 and E10 have still the same price.
    I also have personally strong doubts that E10 makes any good to the environment - since consumption is higher, you make CO2 to produce ethanol and you need land that cannot be used for food, to produce the raw materials to generate it. I think that E5/E10 are a delirious solution to the CO2 "problem".

    In the US the EPA is pushing for E15, they even got NASCAR to run it in 2011. But I agree it's not good for the enviroment, cost more to produce, raises food and cattle prices as more corn is used for fuel Vs feed and food products, fuel mileage on vehicles is aprox 5MPG less then gas alone. The only thing I see it helps is the government, as you use more fuel so they collect more in fuel taxes (both State and Federal), farmers still get subsidies and more for the corn as the gas companies have to buy it to meet the minimium requirements.

    I track every gallon used and I'm down 5MPG since the switch and my 08 Highlander Hybrid is only getting around 20MPG in the winter cold weather and the wife's Prius is down as well.

    How using more fuel and hight food prices can make any sense, except for the hidden tax increase, is beyond me.

    Obama got a lot of corn money during the 08 campaign, and that undoubtedly is affecting fuel policy. Not that the opposition is any different on this issue.

    Jimmy Carter and the 70s oil embargo gave us a head start on environmental issues in the world, but we have been dragging our feet since, and are in danger of lagging behind.

Nothing unique to report with this tank although it must be noted that the difference btwn calc'd and MFD is staggering but not out of the ordinary compared to my other fill ups. Also to note, the next tank is running on Premium (AKI 91/Ron 95) because my usual station ran out of regular (AKI 87/Ron 91)

    For once I will post just one pic - this is what happens when the temperature is 10C, instead of 0-5C, when the traffic is kind (TGIF) and you managed to do a more smooth route than the rest of the week... :D

    I didn't manage to get less than 5L/100km for quite some time now due to temperatures and traffic. 4.3L/100km, means 4.3+6%error= 4.56L/100km or 51.6mpg in town, work commute round trip. I am happy :)

    On a VERY cold trip to ski country about ~200 miles only got 40 mpg vs my usual 50+, I attribute the poor mileage to -5F outdoor temp. Note ran in ECO mode the entire time, speed was kept under 70MPH, car had 2 passengers, ski's inside car, with lots of stuff, only other possibility was the tire pressure was not checked, I am running the yokohama's at 42psi front and back last set back in December on a relatively warm day.

    Considering the -5F/-20C and the 5.8L/100km-40mpg you have achieved, with 2 people and luggage, there is really nothing to complain - actually I think it is very good. -20C is *very* cold, as you said.

    Another 2 from my side..
    The first one (the 29km) is my back+forth commute with a milder ambient temperature (10C) and driving somewhat slowly, i.e. filling the HSI bar only to no more than 3/4.
    The second one is a 0C to 5C suburban trip...
    Even adding 6% error, I am happy...:D

    1st tank ever, and reset trip after delivery, so couldn't manually calculate:

    4 days on tank. Highs in the low to upper 50s; lows in the low 30s. 80% hwy; 20% city.
