A new standard of oil API SN and ILSAC GF-5 for better fuel economy and engine protection

OK, you got me confused here as this is gen 3 forum.

 

Well, I thought you would be interested in the availability of GF-5 oils in the market and you would enjoy the photograph of the label of the first GF-5 synthetic oil in US.

Currently Pennzoil Platinum is the only synthetic GF-5 available but only in 5W-30 (and perhaps 10W-30) grades.

Pennzoil conventional is available in 5W-20. 5W-20 is almost identical to 0W-20 in most weather conditions, except it provides better wear protection and longer drain intervals due to less viscosity modifiers used and less volatility it has but it has a very minor drop (a small fraction of an MPG) in fuel economy.

But 0W-20 is always synthetic, which is a plus. Also, if you use the grade specified in the owner's manual, you will have the peace of mind, even though the reason 0W-20 instead of 5W-20 is specified is entirely legal (what Toyota submits to the CAFE program as proof of them meeting fuel-economy standards, even though the difference is around 0.1 MPG). The Corolla variant of the Prius engine specifies both 5W-20 and 0W-20.
