I keep wondering why nobody reads his or her manual.....

A forum is the place where people who don't read manuals ask the people that do read the manuals all sorts of questions.....

    silly innit...

You need to be in the READY mode for about 8 hours for the 12v battery to fully recharge after being jump started.

It is not necessary for the donor car to be running when jump starting the Prius. The Prius only draws about 30A when starting.

I never lock my car in the garage, no need to, the garage is locked.

Bisco, check your location, you live in Boston! Go out and lock your car right now! ;)

Then you will have this problem many times in the future. if you leave your key within range the car keeps some computers alive, which draws power, but more importantly, if you leave a door or the boot ajar you won't receive any warning. if you try to lock the car while the door is ajar it beeps very loudly at you. if you leave the door ajar (and thus the interior lights on) all night, the 12V battery will go flat.

There's also been some owners who forget to turn the car off (engine isn't running, so doesn't remind them) and again, you can't lock it while running, it gives a loud beep. it won't do that if you don't try and lock it. Carbon monoxide poisoning could kill you if you have an indoor garage.

My advice, lock the car. touching the handle is no hardship with the smart key.

It wasn't me that had the problem. I also never leave my keyfob within range.

No need to lock it for other things, I'm careful, I always turn my car off and I'm the only one in the car, so leaving the door open isn't a problem.

    I understand where you're coming from, but it's a convenience issue. :)

I suppose it's easier to ask than to research. Fortunately, the folks at PRIUSchat are very, very patient. Thanks to PRIUSchat, I've learned that the owner's manual provides a wealth of information. That's why I recommend reading the book twice.

I personally do not mind answering a quick question,. That's part of the forum gig.
Yelling at somebody for not reading their manual or not using the search button, when they're just trying to get their car back on the road just isn't how I roll.

OP: Glad you got your ride back on the road!
As stated above, you should do a forensics investigation on yer 12V battery. If you're absolutely POSITIVELY sure 100-percent, cross yer heart sure you're sure that you shut down and locked the car, or didn't leave a key in range, then this might happen again. !!*^$# SKS... :(
Get an inexpensive, compact pair of jumper cables to tote around with you until you determine a cause of death for the battery......it juuuuust might die again.

    Good Luck!

The last time I didn't lock my car in the garage was the first time my 12V went dead because a door was not completely closed. When you use the fob or black door button to lock the car, it serves as cheap insurance that you have definitely turned everything off. Even after driving a Prius for more than 4 years, I once in a while goof & don't turn something off. Taking the extra second to lock the doors has saved me several times.

I'm going to start locking inside the garage, too. I also have caught a door or decklid ajar and no longer feel the risk is worth a battery issue. Honestly, locking doors is a nice habit to get into.

Thanks to your thread, I'm locking my car inside the garage, even though I always keep my garage locked. As someone on this thread says, "It's cheap insurance!"

What exactly is 'in range' for the key fob?

I never lock my car in the garage either (though now I may). I take the key into the house and hang it in the kitchen. There is a wall between where I hang it from and the garage. I always assumed it was enough room.

As all others have said...it's cheap insurance.
I'm pretty sure that nearly 100-percent of the dead 12v battery issues are cockpit errors of some kind, and since I'm stuck with the current SKS system, I've just gotten used to locking the car when I walk away from it.
Yeah. I know. The SKS is das wunderfeture, and I'm an apostate for disliking it.
Yeah...if you live in a demilitarized zone you have to keep your car locked at all times. I get that.

I've been driving GMCs of various kinds for the last 10 years. I usually do not lock my doors when I park...cause there's nothing inside to steal, and why make somebody break a window only to find that there's nothing inside to steal????

If you drive a Prius, lock your doors when you park it. It may save your battery!!! :)

I have monitored the parasitic drain on the battery with the car locked and not locked. There is no difference in battery drain.

First time poster here. Love the Prius, but ....
My car also died today. An hour late for work on a Monday - yay. We bought this car new only 2.5 months ago. My experience was exactly the same as the original poster.

I know, know, know I didn't leave it unlocked or any lights on. I'm completely positive. The car is parked inside and it doesn't get too cold.

Originally Toyota service sent around a tow truck however they ended up boosting the car instead. I am going to take it to the dealership for a look this week.

Before buying our Prius 2 months ago we had a Camry and never had an issue like this. It is unsettling not knowing if the car is going to work tomorrow morning.

Batteries do go bad, new batteries go bad, I could tell you some stories. However, most go bad slowly not at once but it can happen. Also as stated most of the time it is due to something the driver left on. If you want to here a lot of DBS stories go over to the corvetteforum, lol
I had put a new Optima battery in my vette, 6 months later it would not hold a charge, took to store where bought, said they would test it but had never seen one that tested bad, guess what, I had the first bad one they had ever seen, lol.
I never travel out of town with out my handy travel maintence bag with things like jumpercables, tow strap, tools, tape, tie raps and in the case of the vette always bring a OBD2 code reader-reset tool.:mod:
