Hmmm, musta just gone up. $153 at Overstock. Still, a lot of bang for the buck.

I'm amazed at those who think the shift is backwards. There may be some sport cars whose shift patterns are forward for 1st, but most shift patters since the early 3 on the column are just as the prius. Left and forward, reverse, left and towards you 1st.

I don't understand the hubub either; you shift an automatic drive down to get to D.
    R is up from D.

Satisfaction survey? We never received one.

I wouldn't say most. Honda and Nissan have reverse down and right.

But regardless of who uses what, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to have reverse forward and forward back. This would make more sense to me:

    F
    N
    R

Or just a normal automatic shift gate like:

    P
    R
    N
    D

Just like the start button, I think Toyota was trying to save money by making everything electronic. Unfortunately the lack of conformity can sometimes cause confusion, which may be a factor in the high number of NHTSA complaints for the Prius. Or, Prius owners might just be incredibly lame drivers.

I like the way it is...I often use the "B" mode on deceleration and going down a hill before a stop etc. It feels sort of neat just 'tapping' the shifter back for B. Then on acceleration, just a short 'snick' left and back for D. Feels natural and smooth. I guess D forward wouldn't be hard (hard isn't the best word for any of this discussion) but I just, subjectively, like the way it is.

well, my dealer, Kokomo Toyota, wants $40 to do the back-up and seat belt beeps. 1/2 hour labor is what they're charging.

I'm really torn, because I feel like it's a rip off from Toyota. They should have never taken away the ability for the driver to fix it. It's a pure money ploy. And so many people here are getting it done for free.

But on the other hand, why should the dealer have to do it for free? It's not their fault that Toyota programmed the car this way. I think it should just be a set fee, like 10 bucks.

I'm going to talk to them about it again when I set up the appointment. I'll let you know what happens. I don't suppose anyone around Kokomo has a scangauge II do they?

I've been to my dealer and talked to Toyota, and I'm upset. I'm posting a thread about it.

The 6th gen NAV system in the Lexus has some of the customizable features (at least not those that pose liability issues) user-configurable in the NAV screen. That'll probably become available in future generation Toyota NAV, as Lexus features usually trickle down to Toyota over time.

Maybe it was the dealers idea for Toyota to make this change. Toyota doesn't benefit from you paying the dealer $40 to fix a problem that shouldn't exist --the dealers do.

The problem is Lexus offers a one-time, complimentary Lexus Personalized Settings program in the first year, but Toyota offers no such complimentary program so Toyota dealers do whatever they want, including charging for them if they think they can get away with it.

I really like the shifter setup in the 2010 prius. Its one of my favorite features. Plus, isn't the shifting order exactly the sme as quoted above??? Park button on top, then the rest?

I can confirm that the ElmScan 5 USB tool can be used to disable the backup beep and/or the seat belt beep on a Gen III Prius. I paid $38 on Amazon which included the ElmScan 5 and CD with FTDI (USB-serial port emulation) drivers and OBDWiz software. The ElmScan 5 needs a notebook computer attached.

You can use a terminal emulator (e.g., HyperTerminal on Windows) to manually send the query and/or set strings to the ElmScan 5. I actually wrote a simple program to query the backup and seatbelt beep status and then prompt if you want to change either. The whole process takes less than a minute.

I'd be happy to post the program somewhere if there is an interest. $38 is a lot better than $160 for the ScanGauge 2 if all you want is to disable the annoying beeps on the Prius. Oh, and I can also confirm that the same tool and program works on a Lexus HS250.

So, what kind of customized program you have to write in addition to the original software? I'd like to disable only the reverse beep but leave the seat belt beep as is to remind my passenger to wear it. I heard different stories about charges by dealerships. I'd rather do it by myself than being ripped off. Any suggestion?

I chose to write a C# program using Microsoft .Net 4.0. But the main thing is to get access to the serial port on which the Elm5 is connected (e.g., COM4).

My program has a straightforward interface that allows individual setting of the reverse and seat belt warnings. Change each at will.

Screen shot is attached. If you want the program, I'll give you the EXE and/or the source.

Attached is a zip file of the custom program that uses the Elm5 to disable/enable the reverse and/or seat belt beeps in a Gen III Prius or Lexus HS250.

Please follow these instructions to make sure a virus does not get added somewhere along the way:

    1. Do a google search for "microsoft file checksum integrity verifier" and download and install 'fciv.exe' from the official Microsoft support site.

    2. Unzip the attached file: PriusLexusHS250BeepMgr.zip

    3. Run fciv.exe on each of the two unzipped files and confirm that you get the following checksums:
    24ac8fdc02987ec7a6aa54b049897bc3 priuslexushs250beepmgr.exe
    cf7e824eaa064dfce49e95c6464d6b31 elm327.dll

    4. Feel free to run PriusLexusHS250BeepMgr.exe on any machine with the .NET 4.0 framework. (Visit Microsoft Windows Update site if you need more help with this...)

    Enjoy...

    Hi Jerry,
I follow your instructions and successfully disable the reverse beep on my car. Although it was quite confusing at first, I download and setup everything you mentioned. Wala, beeps are gone!!!! Nice!

Thanks, Jerry. I have successfully disabled the beeping using your fabulous program. And for less than $40, I have this and an OBD-II tool!

I just replaced my 04 with a 2011, and I can't seem to get the codes to work. I want to disable the seatbelt beeps as well as the reverse. I also want to add a few xgauges. I pulled a few from the spreadsheet somewhere in this thread, but I couldn't get anything to work. Are the 2011 codes different from the 2010? (yes, my scanguage was updated for X-codes).

I would be terrified to try anything like this on my own...
