Installed Fri and it works perfectly.

Got it to primarily monitor the 12v battery and engine temps related to grill blocking. Secondary reasons include trouble codes and improving mileage via driving techniques which are not the subjects of this thread.

Grill blocking <--> engine coolant temps. Coolant temp I've read is also a loose proxy for inverter temp. Reading suggests that a reasonable/target range could be approx 170-195* with short duration spikes to 205* or so. Is this reasonable?? I've grill blocked for 3 yrs with good results. 1st two long runs with current block gave WT at 184-188*.

12v Battery Ops. 2 yrs ago we fried one by leaving lights on for well over an hour + radio. Sad to say it's spouse's car and it's mostly for very short hops with lights on. Readings 14.1 - 14.3v while driving and 12.2 - 12.4v during the 12 seconds SG is shutting down. My question/guess is that these are good and that voltage readings a point lower for either is cause for charging or further study??

Will try Xguages in a few days ... any other guages recommended for either grill blocking or the 12v on our Gen 2.

Thanks in advance -- This is a great place for info.

LOL, thanks, i've been considering one for awhile. but since peef teased us with his 'kitchen table' model, i've been hoping he will make it for sale soon. if not, i think danny sells them here. i'll have to check his price.:)

I'm not sure they're a great proxy since the engine and inverter are on different coolant loops. FWT of 170-195 sounds fine. 205, hmm, I don't think I've seen it that high w/a blocked grille but I haven't had very long drives in a long time. I've done some highway runs w/blocked grille and IIRC, at one point, FWT was down to 170. There seems to be quite a bit of heat loss at highway speeds.

I now leave an opening on the lower grille on the driver's side to ensure the transmission gets some cooling. In other threads, it's been stated the inverter and MG1/MG2 loop is at the bottom of the radiator. I didn't leave the opening last winter (but didn't know any better, back then).

Sorry to go a bit OT, but you might find http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...angauge-best-threads-mileage-improvement.html and http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...77-updated-list-gen-ii-xgauges-scangauge.html useful, as a start.
You might want to set a price alert on Amazon price tracker / tracking, Amazon price history charts, price watches, and price drop alerts. | camelcamelcamel.com so you get notification when they drop their price.

I've been using mine for years now.

RPM is a favorite, since you can see when the engine is about to shut off and it's rather informative seeing how much the engine actually revs up when you accelerate. RPM of 0 is always pleasing too.

Coolant Temp is great to know... here in Minnesota. You can see how quickly the engine is warming up, letting you know how close the heater is to delivering substantial heat. It also informs you if EV mode is available.

Checking Codes has been a useful feature 4 times now. No, not on my Prius. But I've had 2 friends, my sister, and my mom all needing a check. Being able to quickly offer a diagnosis of their problem is great.

MPG is rather nice too, since the gauge in the Prius only displays up to 100. This was especially handy when driving the PHV, getting see values from above 200 MPG while driving above the EV threshold was sweet.

The loose proxy thought is related to what I recall is that the Inverter temp(as is engine temp) is related to ambient air temp and possibly speed (work).... +30* or so over ambient normally. My limited deduction ability and limited knowledge suspected that at high ambient (say +110 or so) and high speed (workload) the Inverter might be at some risk ... tho this is a well thought out critter and that may not be so.
Recall that some years ago a PC'r in Olympia WA ran blocked to 205 or so without even the fan coming on ... in any case this would be for short durations only ... 10 min or so max.

"""I've done some highway runs w/blocked grille and IIRC, at one point, FWT was down to 170. There seems to be quite a bit of heat loss at highway speeds."""

Understand your point but thought speed increased the temp at least at cool conventional temps and speeds ... will check it.

'''''I now leave an opening on the lower grille on the driver's side to ensure the transmission gets some cooling. In other threads, it's been stated the inverter and MG1/MG2 loop is at the bottom of the radiator."""

Unless the temp is under 20(seldom) I do not close the skinny vents at the top and bottom and also leave 2-3 inch gaps on all the driver side blocks.
Gen 2 inverter at bottom, recall for Gen 3 it is near the top.

I am guessing 10 min. max is not worth worrying. For longer drives the reason to monitor inverter temperature is not to see how well it tracks the ambient temp when everything works normally - but rather to catch the dreaded inverter coolant pump failure, hopefully before the spectacular event of "Christmas tree lights" occurs. Just my 2 cents.

    Thanks 09--

We've got a trip planned thru the SW desert including, Death Valley, in a few months ... so monitoring all temps is important to us. We never drive over about 65 mph and go slower when temp among other things are issues.
