Capital Commerce: Tangled tax breaks for hybrids

    The article, and other literature says...

    "As soon as an automaker has sold 60,000 hybrids, the tax credit phases out. Since Toyota anticipates selling 100,000 of its Prius hybrids this year alone and customer demand is only rising along with gasoline prices, the tax credit on this top-selling hybrid will be short-lived."

    Is the 60K limit per model year, or cummulative? If cummulative, there will be no tax credit for the 2006 Prius.

    I have a sinking feeling that 2006 buyers will be doing "for the flag".

    the 60k limit is cumulative for all toyota hybrids sold in 2006.
    that doesn't count cars sold in 2005; those get the current tax deduction instead.
