Don't have a Prius yet, but will probably be able to buy my FIL's 2005 with 16K on the odometer pretty soon. The garage kept car is in great shape and looks new.

It has been garaged parked for the last 3 months. About two weeks ago I started it up in the garage and it ran fine. Shut it down after a minute. Well, this weekend I wanted to change the oil in it since the last change was early 2009, about 3000 miles ago. Anyway, I went to start it and it was dead! I guess I must of depleted what energy was left in the 12V battery. Figured that out after reading through this great site.

So using "Toyota Prius User-Guide, Eighth Edition, Eighth Revision for the ICONIC (2004-2009) model" I quickly found how easy it is to jump start the engine. Piece of cake!

Engine cranked right up and I drove it for about 15 miles to warm it up and then went home and put Mobil 1 5W30 and a PureOne filter in it. The oil change on this car is really easy, the drain plug and filter are easily accessible.

Afterwords, my wife and I took it for a countryside drive and enjoyed the car a lot. This car definitely has a lot of trips in store for it should we be lucky enough buy it from my FIL.

I have two questions for you Prius experts, as a Mechanical Engineer I love looking at gauges, oil pressure, coolant temp, RPM, you know, the usual geeky engineering stuff. Is there not some way to pull this info up on the screen? I sure haven't been able to find it yet if it really is there. I hope it is.

The other is how to figure out if the car has a Navigation system. I haven't been able to read through the manual yet. Is the Nav system standard or optional?

I appreciate the help and look forward to being an active member on this forum in the near future. The Prius is fascinating car and I sure hope to be able to learn all about them with your help.

    Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I hope you can obtain the car form your FIL. I and most of the others use a ScanGauge II to pull the tech data and display real time info. Someone else here will need to chime in of the NAV for that year as I'm not experienced on the 2005 model. 16K miles on an 05 is amazing.

    Thanks for the Welcome Mark.

Yes, I agree 16k (actually 16.5k) is low. My MIL has a 2001 Corolla with 22k on it. It's also in terrific shape. Just changed the oil in that one too.

So, the Prius does not have a "instrument panel" display showing engine vital statistics? :(

Again, I have a 2010 so I can't tell you about the 05's. Does it have the owner's manual? It will have the layout and features. If it does not have the owner's manual, here's a link to the 2005 pocket guide on the Chicago Prius Group web site. http://www.chicagopriusgroup.com/resources/2005_Prius-Pocket-Guide.pdf

I have a loaded 2005 Prius so I might be able to help you. If you have a MAP button next your screen, push it and you will know if you have a working nav. I suggest you go to John's great Prius website (john1401a.com) and print the User Guide. The reason that the Pruis does not have gauges is that the car is way smarter than us and will turn on the engine check light if anything is not right. If you are changing your own oil you will need to see page 28 of the guide to reset the oil change due function which turns this light on. Wait until you find out all the wonderful features are hidden in this great piece of engineering. Put a good set of tires on as soon as possible, it makes it even better ( I love my Michelin HydroEdges).
