I have winter rims and tires without a TPMS sensor installed. The OEM rims with the tires and sensors are in the garage near the car. When I start the car in the garage the TPMS light does not come on. It detects the sensors are near by. After driving for 15 minutes the LED starts blinking.

The LED will remain on until I get back home. It is odd that your light goes out.

Good to know. I have had a new Alpine NAV unit installed and ceramic window tint was done. However, the problem started way before that. When it first happened I took it back to the dealer once, then had the tint and Alpine put in.

I hope they're not going to try to blame something I did. I had tint and aftermarket head units in my Hondas and their TPMS system never freaked out.

I wouldn't worry about that. As I said, my issue was cause by mods I did, but they didn't seem upset by that. Everyone I dealt with was just concerned about finding the cause of the problem. It didn't matter who or what caused it. They did ask a lot of questions about what I did to the car, but it was just to help them troubleshoot, not to place blame.I really have to give Toyota high marks on how they handled this with me. I have absolutely no complaints.

Update: Toyota Service Dept visit #3

Well this time they didn't try to blame it on cold weather or my setting the pressures @ 40/38.

After about an hour the service guy told me they were resetting and reprogramming the sensor and it would be about 15 more minutes. A half hour later, he came back out with my key and said I was ready to go. But they had the sensor fail immediately after reprogramming this time. (good! :) ) He said they ordered a new antenna/receiver unit for the TPMS that they would install next week.

I don't know if this is the cause of some others' problems here, just thought I'd keep you posted.

Update: Toyota Service Dept visit #4

Well I took the car back last week and waited 3 hours for them to replace the "receiver" and re-program all the sensors and reset the TPMS system.

After a couple of days, the problem has started happening again. :(

It starts blinking after 20 minutes, then stays on constantly, then goes off after 10 or so more minutes.

I have checked all tire pressures cold, and they're good (between 34 and 38). I hate to go back again. I'm wondering if that dealership's service dept are a bunch of dufusses and I should try another one?

Other than that (and dash rattling like crazy) I do enjoy the car.

This might have been checked already, but make sure they are also checking the sensor in the spare tire..

Nope, no sensor in the spare on the Prius.

Re: Update: Toyota Service Dept visit #4

They may have mis-keyed on the programming of the sensors into the new ECU. It sounds dumb, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't double check that. I'd recommend a new dealer at this point - not because the current one is a "dufuss" but maybe the other dealer may have more experience with the TPMS to troubleshoot the problem.
