Like many Prius, mine has suffered from a persistent dash rattle. The dealer fixed it once while it was still under warranty, and it took an experienced technician several hours to disassemble the dash, fix the rattle, and put it all back together again. Eventually it started rattling again, and I have just lived with it rather than spend the time tearing apart the dash. I figured that any fix would be temporary, and I would likely cause another rattle trying to fix this one.

Well, a couple of days ago we were driving into the city. The rattle was particularly obnoxious, and seemed to be growing in intensity. I pressed on the dash in several places to see if made any difference. The rattle got louder and looser sounding, and then went "Tink!", like the sound of a falling screw, and then went silent. I can only assume that somewhere under my dash there is now a wayward screw. Hopefully it won't cause a short, but at least the rattle is gone for now.

can I ask where your rattle was located and where and how hard you pressed down? I have been having a rattle located on the passenger side of the dash.

Is it the shelf in the upper box? Has the shelf fallen off and rattling around in there? Hal

My rattle was central, and sounded like it came from just to the left of the center speaker. My pressing down was unrelated to the screw falling out. That screw finally gave up and dropped out on its own. I figure it's probably waiting to fall into my MFD and short it out.

Maybe the speaker magnet got it? Hal

Just yesterday, my 2008 went into my dealership after suffering with this Left side/Dash area rattle at slow speeds on mine.

I left the car with them over 5 hours, at their request, as the assigned Tech removed the Dash and dove in for the repair, after driving it himself and checking the noise out.

My car just turned 13000 miles, all mine. Not much for a 2008 , but I don't drive far with it, usually just around town with this car, so pretty much slow speeds, and the noise seemed to begin about 1000 miles ago I think. I did nothing about it, until yesterday, realizing my time (36 months) part of the warranty expires in a couple months.

Now a day later after the repair, and putting on maybe 30 miles with it, deliberately taking somewhat small bumps on purpose...I am very happy..the rattle is gone..completely. Sure hope it's cured now.

The Tech found loose wiring and connectors and a Dash clearance issue(s).

The correction as per sign off was:

'Insulate Dash..Re-secure wiring harness and/or connectors.'

Hope this helps others with the same issue and their dealerships. My rattle seemed like it was coming from the small vent window/and or left dash area. But pushing down on the dash did not quiet it, yet the fix was under that dash anyway.

My Dealer is RIGHT TOYOTA, Scottsdale, AZ., and the Tech was Manuel Rivas, whom worked on it. He is a senior Tech at this dealership.

I bought this car there and a another, and these guys have always been very customer friendly in the service department.
