My wife has a 2009 Gen 2 prius and loves the car. 17,000 miles on it after 2 years. We have two years left on an auto loan and the payoff is $10,600. the Toyota dealer is offering a 2010 prius gen 3 with package 4 to us with 0 % financing and giving us a good trade on her 2009 generation 2. I think the car is listed at $32,000 and they are down to about $30,000 and will give her $17,000 for her car which we owe 10,600 on. so the net comes out to about $25,000 to borrow at zero percent interest. Is it worth upgrading to the 2010 generation 3 from the two year old 2009 generation 2?

The question is ... do you want to owe $15K more for a one year newer car, even with all the upgrades ? Personally, I would look at a 2010 II, get it for about $21K, and end up with a $14K loan at 0%, which is only about $4K more than the loan you already have ... move up 2 years (worth of driving) and 17K miles. Get into a Gen 3 for $4K ? Absolutely ... move to a GEN III for $15K more ???? Nah ....

You need to check prices for used, low mileage 2009's AND new 2010's (model IV). At $32k list, it must have nav and solar.

Dealers play games when you're trading, NEVER to your advantage. You'll usually get more selling a low mileage used car than the dealer will give you. Based on your math you'll be increasing your debt by $14.4k (your $25k must include TTR). But we don't know your current interest rate and monthly payment.

Ignoring the monthly payment amounts, $13k for one year newer car (even if it's a loaded G3 model IV) seems like a lot.

No, don't do it. It is an absolute scam and common dealer ploy for them to make a commission. You get nothing from the deal. If you want a new car every 3 years, shouldve leased maybe.

You're not special either: Just 3 days ago when I was at the dealership for my oil change I was hanging out in the sales floor and this salesman tried to get me to trade my 09 for a 10 V because "it can park itself." Hey man, I may have just been sniffing the insides of those new cars, but I'm not stupid.

I agree with this feedback 100%. If you are considering a 2010, don't go to th8is guy that made you the offer. Take the details from the offer he made and shop around a little bit. Make sure YOU are the one to make the initial offers. Especially on a 2010. A 2010 IV isn't a $30,000 car. Should be a 2011 at that rate and in that case it better have every option possible. I just got a 2010 III a week ago yesterday for about $20,000 with a $10,500 trade. So I am out the door for around $10,000 owed on my 2010 that has 13,000 miles. Make sure you shop around b4 making a deal. Make this dealer trying to scam you sweat a bit. Play the game he is playing on you, but play it better. Go find a better deal, then come back to him and make him compete with the other deal. Get the most for your money. And YOU be the one holding all the cards when it comes time to make a deal. When I bought my 2010 prius, I had four seperate dealers/four seperate 2010 prius's competing for my business. Good luck and let me know if you need help strategizing.

Another tip is to wait till the end of the month. Dealers are scratching for deals by the end of the month because they have their own bills to pay and the other dealer to compete with for # of sales. Your holding on to a gem of a 2009. What is its value? Nada? Kbb?. Search for more than trade in values... I got private party value on my trade. It was a 2004 vw passat 4motion with 78,000 miles. No gem, but I SOLD it to them the best I could to get the best deal possible. Good luck again. :)

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like you think the dealer is snowing me. It's interesting because the last time he lowered the price he only did it by $200 and claimed that there was not that much of a mark up on the prius. do you think he was just giving me B.S.? It sure sounds like you think we were getting hosed. Glad we didn't jump on the offer. My wife likes her current car so I think she will just stay put and drive it until it's paid off. That seems to make the most sense.

I agree. It's the 20th now so only one week left in the month. We told him we couldn't do the deal until Wednesday. He started the deal at list price and i almost walked out. He then came back with something better but he only seems to come down about $200 at a time. do you think by next weekend he'll be more despirate? The 0 % interest is only until the 28th.

You have about $700 of interest left to pay. Taking on $15,000 in new debt, on something that will depreciate several thousand dollars the moment you drive it off the lot, will cost you far more than that.

I wouldn't do it, but then my bias is to not even consider unloading any car under a decade old, now pushing two decades. Most folks can't stand a ride that long.

wow!! Dealer will give $17k trade-in?? What is it a touring with leather?? Get that in writing. I sweat to pull $18.5k out of my 09 pack5, 15k miles, pristine, but I did it. Trade in likely would have been under $16k.

Pierecy Toyota sales mgr. bragged openly about getting a 2008 package 6, 19k miles for $14.5k on trade in. That person lost their nice person cause I know that car was $31k OTD anytime around year 2008.

If both of you are happy with the car, just keep it. Cars are so not worth selling then buying another if you're happy. But you did mention 0% APR opposed to your current 6.9%. Might be worth considering. Must you get leather? Is the current one leather. Maybe you could get by with a II or III.

I had to get out of my 2009 as I hated just about every minute driving the car - 6'2" tall with long legs. The hybrid novelty wore off in a month or so, then it was, oh s@&*, this thing is sooooooooooo awkward.

That said I could have easily dropped into a 3rd gen and been comfy, but went with the Honda instead.
