I got a 2005 Prius with the AM package (side curtain airbags included) recently. I would like to replace the regular rear view mirror with the auto-dimming homelink mirror. I found a couple of online toyota websites where I can get it for ~$195/-.

I called and both of them stated that the auto-dimming mirror with homelink has a conflict with side curtain airbags. These are their notes from Toyota and they recommend against it. The people I talked to advised me against it as it could be a safety issue but it is upto me if I want to buy it and get it installed. When I told them that there are other packages that Prius offers where both come installed, they stated that maybe there is a different way of wiring INTERNALLY at the factory itself that prevents this from happening.

I noticed quite a few Prius owners with side-curtain airbags have replaced the mirrors. I really would like to get it but am afraid the side curtain airbags may not deploy due to the conflict.

    I would appreciate your comments!

It's true that higher packages have both of them combined. I assume Toyota doesn't want installers to install the wire, fiddle with the side airbag and then when a side collision happens, the airbag doesn't deploy and then the driver's sues them.

I believe vfaq.net has instructions on how to install the mirror. Just be very careful around the airbags as you will need to have the wire run by it.

Mine is installed on my car from the factory.

Why do you want the autodim mirror? For me, it doesn't get dark enough (although I need to try john1701a's modification) and I don't use the Homelink since I park outside.

I really don't like it now since it seems to have developed a rattle at certain speeds, mostly around highway driving speeds! I'm tempted to take the thing out, but don't know about all those wires.

There was a discussion about this, but I think it was during the two months of posts that were lost. I believe it boiled down to the dealer didn't want to risk passing the wire so close to an installed airbag. Installation at the factory is done on an open vehicle in stages, and the problem is only with adding it later.

I think Tideland summed it up well. Just be very careful. :)

I have done John1701a's mod and it still doesn't get dark enough for me, and the wife still doesn't like it either. If I do find a conventional rear view mirror I'll probably take this one off and glue the other on. It'll be a window mount one as I'll keep it as high on the window as possible to minimise the amount of realestate the mirrror covers. What I have found is it is too slow to change. If a PU/SUV/Truck changes lanes behind you I find that I just push it out of my vision. It's not worth $195 USD in my opinion.

Frank, move the mirror up. I had the mirror in its lowest position and it would rarely dim as the spoiler blocks the headlight. Right now, I've moved the mirror up on its pivot and very close to the headliner. Now, it dims much more often than before.

I love auto-dimming mirrors. Ever since we had one in the Camry, I'd never buy a car with the flippy day/night mirror.

It is easy to remove with one screw. When my last Prius got rearended it was hanging by the wire and I just unplugged it. They are made to pop off.

My new pkg 6 had it and I just removed it and hid the plug. Not happy with the aftermarket I have now either. Probably need the factory one.
Mine is just sitting here if someone wants to buy it. Help a packrat out!

it's all the way up. you've still got young eye's there, mine have had a million welding flashes and are really sensitive to bright lighs. I can see it dim but not nearly enough to suite us. Anybody who's had cataract surgury and radial caratotmy (sp) should seriously not consider this mirror.

I wish the side mirrors were wired to dim when the rearview does, but other than that the dimmer works OK as far as I'm concerned.

And here I was worried about my eyes... ;)

Wouldn't that be great? I move the outside mirrors to compensate now but dimming would be nice. I really think there should be a driver sensitivity control. I tried the tape and moving the mirror up as tideland did helped (even turned upside down) but flipping an old style mirror is less distracting and it's definitive.
Depending on the cars distance behind you and if the spoiler (has a different meaning here) is blocking the sensor you may or may not get glare.
I thought I had seen one with the sensor IN the mirror glass where your eyes would meet. If it was small enough not to block that would make the most sense and perhaps more effective.

I remember long ago here there was a post with someone who had put a small fresnel lens on the lower rear glass as a aid for viewing in reverse. I wonder if that would diffuse the headlights enough to activate the dimming sensor when it would be normally blocked by the spoiler?

I have it and need to try the mod (or electrical tape covering it by 3/4). Ifwhat I had was just a mirror, I'd install one of those that have the LCD screen and the rear view camera.

The Prius sits outside the garage (need to clean it), but I have the garage door (and my parent's door) programmed in. I'd like to set up the third for a house light.

    Thanks all for the info.

Let me clarify why I would like to get the mirror. I am ONLY interested in the homelink feature. I don't want to carry another clicker on my visor as I do today with my old car. That's the only reason I am looking at the mirror.

Having said that and looking at some of the posts, do you agree that if I get it done at a dealer is it a "safe modification " i.e. won't interfere with the side airbags? Will I be risking any warranty from Toyota by doing this?

On a side note, is there any other integrated product (with something in the car itself) I can get that can do the homelink transceiver functionality? I don't want to replace my clicker with another one.

    Thanks!

I have seen a photo documented installation here or linked from here, did not seem too hard. Do a search or google

I think it is up to your feeling after your research if you want to install or have the dealer do it. Dealer install of course is the safest, but watch their pricing. I was quoted $234 when I broke a tail light (SUV are taller than us), found another dealer at $174 and bought at a online dealer for $150. So there is some creative pricing out there (suggested retail).

Just ask a few dealers their labor quote, might surprise you. Hopefully in a good way.

As I mentioned, I have taken mine off. If you decide you want one, I would sell mine. Took off 4 days after I got my second prius.

just thinking about your problem, with installation and the mirror assy. it might just be cheaper to buy one or the other the same garage door opener assy. and program them for the same code. And you keep the mirror that you can actually dim on demand.
