Peak Oil for the US was 1970 (lag effect to really take hold in 1973). We are now in Peak Everything. We have had 40 years to get our act together - but we have been the grasshopper playing the fiddle.

The rising cost of fuel will unlock countless doors to innovation, opportunity and change: 10,000 fewer people will die in car crashes, air quality will improve and heart disease will decrease, UPS electric trucks will be the norm, there will be greater demand for walking & bicycle routes, increased use of bicycles and PHEV smart cars, and less emphasis on individual vehicles. Large scale "ghost boxes" such as WalMart will decrease. sprawling cities will contract and conservation & efficiency will permeate everything.

 

In that one investment period, yes, it would have been a loser. But if you own a lot of oil stocks, it's sort of hedge against oil inflation.

 

Haven't read it, but I agree with the premise with the title. No amount of lawmaking will change our behavior with regards to oil, but the price going up will.

i say whatever it costs us to buy a barrel of oil is how much we should charge for a barrel of corn sent to the middle east. we can get our own oil (after obama leaves) but they can't really grow a whole lot of food in the desert.
