Just wanted to get some ideas on how much it'll run me to do a 15K service. for starters, I never had any service done except for the 5K oil change which ran me about $75. I'm in the L.A. area and I bought the car from Power Cerritos. any good dealers that have good prices?

    thanks!

I recommend checking the websites of dealers in your area. Most have web/coupon specials, and will honor competitors specials.

I had the 15K service done for $49, including oil/filter service. The dealer had oil/filter special of $25, plus $15 up-charge for synthetic oil, so $40. Plus $8.88 for tire rotation, and free multi-point inspection.

And here I thought that w/Toyota Care, maintenance services w/provided coupons were free for the first 2 years. Wrong, huh?

Your potential reponders reside around the globe, in countries where Toyota has likely varied service requirements and intervals, not to mention miles vs kilometers. And even within your US audience, I'm sure if you asked what specifically a "15K" service entails you would get a wide range of responses, due to confusion, neglecting to read Toyota's maintenance documentation and first and foremost:

Because the responders have experiences at dealership service departments where "interpretation" of what constitutes required maintenance is the norm, heck: it's their bread-and-butter.

That said, there are instances where it would be good to exceed basic maintenance requirements. A transaxle fluid change, early in the car's history, for example.

Anyway, what do you think a 15K service entails? What specific inspections, replacements, adjustments, etcetera. Spell that out, and people will be able to respond more accurately.

FWIW, if you go through the chore of seeing what's specifically required, you'll likely have half-answered your own question. ;)

Why are you paying for the oil change before 25,000 miles. It's covered under ToyotaCare.

I took delivery of my 2010 Prius in June 2009, long before that was offered.

IF you have to pay for your own oil change....its cheaper to buy your own Synthetic oil and tell the dealer to use your oil.

Even though my oil changes are free for my 09 Highlander, I always buy my Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-20 oil from Walmart or Costco. I live in the Washington DC metro area so any driving around here is considered severe with all the traffic. Synthetic offers the best protection for the engine.

Anyways back on topic.....only have the dealer do what the book says as far as your 15k maintenance. Nothing else is needed...if its not in the book, dont have it done.

Do they even make a 5w20 that is NOT synthetic? My assumption is Toyota is putting in synthetic 5w20 when I take it to them.

    FYI--the 2010 Prius uses 0W-20.

    Not for me.

For my last service, for 0W-20, the dealer charged $5.17/quart (list is $6.94). I checked the web, and there's nobody selling 0W-20 synthetic for anything close to that.

Interesting, it was being offered for financed purchases that month (but NOT 0% APR, grr).

Not sure if Toyota changed the rules between 2010 and 2011. I have a 2011 and EVERYTHING is covered for the first 2 years or 25k miles. There are no out-of-pocket expenses.

I saw 0w-20 at walmart yesterday. Trying to save money and going to a Toyota dealership for this trivial service seem well ... confusing ;)

Most of what is included in 15K service, beyond what is part of the 5K service, is either not relevant to the Prius, or involves checking fluid levels and trivial maintenance that you probably already do yourself. Since I changed my oil at 5K, I just did the oil change and tire rotation (5K service) at 15K.

    Sigh.

Like you, I have a Prius that isn't covered under the ToyotaCare package (delivery in December, 2009).

Second: Toyota changed its policies on how often the car needs its oil changed. The original policy was an oil change every 5K miles. It got changed to once every 10K. That went into effect in January, 2010. Hence, assuming you're following the maintenance plan, you shouldn't have changed your oil at 5K unless (a) you felt like enriching the dealer's wallet as an act of charity or (b) you, like many others including myself, don't like the idea of iron shavings from the break-in period running around in the engine.

Pretty much, every 5000 miles Toyota (US) wants you to:

    1. Rotate the tires.
    2. Either clean or replace the cabin air filter.
    3. Stare at the brakes to see if they're worn (ha! On a Prius?)
    4. Do the usual 20-point inspection on the car (ball joints, brake lines, fluid levels, etc.)
Every 10K you add a replacement of the engine oil and filter to this.

So, if this is a true 15K service, you wouldn't be replacing the oil; the rest of it shouldn't set you back more than $20-$30.

If, on the other hand, you've decided that the 15K service now includes an oil change, then I bow to the other posters who think that that should cost you around $50 or so.

Over here on the Right Coast the dealer wants about that; the cheapie oil change joints claim they can do it for less, but when you throw in the synthetic oil and the tire rotation they come in $20 higher.

    Good luck!

    KBeck.

Walmart has it at a lot of their stores for less than $5 per quart when you buy the big jugs. I bought a couple today for $23.75 each for a five quart jug. I think that is about $4.75 per quart. If my dealer was charging $5.17 I don't think I would bother. Most charge much more.
