    greetings!

A friend of mine told me about this place and told me I should come check it out. I've read some really interesting posts. I especially like the one regarding defaulting the NAV so you can operate it while in motion that was one of the "safety" feeatures that I thought was a little too much since a passenger could do it.

Anyway, if you anyone has any cool features that us newbies don't know about that would be entertaining to say the least.

I do have a couple questions... Anyone try to hook up a mac mini to run itunes through the touch screen? anyway to get that back up beeping turn off, it's rather annoying, plus it should be on the outside to warn the people around you of a silent car in motion... Tricks to better mileage other than going 55? The best I've gotten on a tank so far is 50.2 MPG (so it tells me). I average roughly 45-46, but my last tank it couldn't have been that.

    thanks in advance!!

    Isaac

    check out this website:

    http://john1701a.com/

scroll half way down and click on User-Guide (HSD)

there you can download a pdf or a word document that has so really good advice on driving, disabling the annoying beeping when going in reverse.

    hmm.. fun stuff?

I'll tell ya.. sometimes, it's fun to drive it like a sports car :D Speeding down the highway passing others in amazement that a car that runs on batteries CAN go fast too! It's also fun to just accelerate rapidly.. why? Because we can and it does it well.

Now.. if you do this all the time, you'll see a direct impact on your mileage. Do it occasionaly (as I have done over my 4500 miles - actually make that rarely, not occasionaly) and you won't see much of a difference.

Just as an example. If you drove 4500 miles at 50mpg and the drove 500 miles at 5!! (not sure if it's even possible) then you'd average out at 45.5mpg. A 4.5mpg drop.

So, have some occasional fun and see what that baby can do!

oh.. I should also add.. have you found all the cool storage spaces?

Played with the NAV system? Checked out the info screen with the data for maintenance intervals and such? Used Stealth mode to freak anyone out?

Hey, Isaac. Time for my schpeel. Those of you who have heard this before can tune out.

On the very bottom of ever page is a link called "Lo-Fi Version." THis links you to the text-only version of Priuschat. It's not as flashy, but it loads very quickly and allows you to skim topics and threads. Most people are good with their thread topics. That is to say a topic on eliminating the backup beep might be titled something as radical as "How do I eliminate the backup beep?" And of course someone has provided the answer in there.

There are some things to remember, however. Lo-Fi doesn't give pictures so you will miss those. Lo-Fi also doesn't give attachments. If you find any references to either of those, you will need to click the links either on the top or bottom of the Lo-Fi page and read the Hi-Fi version of the page.

All threads are ordered with the most recently replied to on top. In my opinion, some of the greatest wealth of information was a year ago when EVERYONE was a Prius newby and we were all finding new things and asking questions and experimenting. So my advice is to start with the absolutely last page of posts and work your way to the present.

    I hope that helps.

And welcome to Priuschat. You're gonna need a comfortable chair. :D

youve asked alot of questions.... they are all addressed in detail... if you do a search youll have days of reading to do!

I thought the beeping was on the outside?... I don't own mine yet, but based on what i've read i thought it was.... and btw.. the manual has directions on how to turn it off.

Beeping is on the INSIDE. Which is why it's also pointless.

The manual does not, as far as I'm aware of, have instructions on how to turn it off. The knowledge base, faq, and many other places list the magic instructions instead.

No, it's not pointless. The reason why beeping was introduced was to warn the driver that the car is in reverse because there is said to have been cases when reverse was engaged inadvertently after stopping at lights so that when the lights changed the car moved backwards.

    :D Welcome isaac.o.

You might also like to take a look at PriusOnline.com - slightly different format but lots of good info there as well.

One suggestion - post your location - it helps others give practical responses to your queries. You can go to "Control Panel" (Navigation area) - Scroll down to "Personal Profile" where you can enter information like an avatar (digital picture of your Prius, s.o., pet, self, etc. - your avatar can't exceel 150x100 pixels & 50KB so you may need to edit your picture before entering it) and/or signature which can be appended to each post you make.

While your Owner's Manual contains scads of information, some tips and hints you find here aren't documented in the Manual.

ENJOY YOUR MOST UNIQUE "WHEELS" !!

Right, I can understand that.. I've done that myself while parking.

But I still blame that on the broken/non-fool-proof shifter design that doesn't lock in place like all the other auto-shifters/state-machines in the world so you can easily get in trouble if you're not paying attention.

Speaking of that... I don't suppose a kid inadvertently grabbing the knob or bumping it would throw it is reverse while in drive do you?.. or even park for that matter....
I think I read somewhere this is protected?

But while sitting still, this may be a danger for sure!

I too would like a pushbutton on the shifter where it would not move without pressing it first... maybe something easy, you could press with your thumb...

Hey, that's genius. Just a simple push-button on the shifter knob's side, it can jiggle all it wants as it does now, but doesn't perform anything until you press-n-shift. But then, I know people who have problems with child-proof lids. :p

But yes, there's logic to prevent it from doing stupid things such as go into reverse while you're driving, or park while you're move over a certain speed. Personally, I prefer more hardened protection.

Thanks. I try to keep it maintained and current. Heck, since I only have to do it on average once every other week, it certainly doesn't take long.

I usually have a copy of it in my car at all times. This way, when someone asks for numbers and figures I can show them. There's another thread in which people attest to non-Prius owners quoting their mileage as being surprisingly high. With this chart, I can prove mine without a doubt. And when someone mentions theirs, I ask to see their chart. When they can't produce it, I ask them to prove what they're telling me with one year's worth of tracking. Sounds harsh, but I believe that if you're going to make assertions you should have the facts to back it out. Otherwise, it's just speculaton and hearsay.
