^^ the new crop of 40 mpg cars are advertising highway mileage only. City is about 25, so for many consumers their actual overall mpg will be about 32.5.

Very nice improvement, but not even close to Prius range which will consume about 50% less fuel/distance.

Unless you live on the highway, those cars get only high 20 in the city.

The game is still the same (dominated by Prius) and nothing has changed.

The thing about the Chevy Cruze is that only one of its models tops the 40 MPG mark, the others fall short. All of the Elantra models hit the 40 mark. As far as the new Ford Focus....38 MPG.

Consumer reports compared the Volt to the 2010 Prius, and the result was that overall the Prius got better MPG and had a much lower TCO.

Here is the more complete view of hybrid sales
February 2011 Dashboard: Hybrid Sales Outpace Growing Auto Market | Hybrid Cars

Key take aways are that hybrid sales are growing, but not as high as when gas prices were here before. Hybrid sales are only 2.4% of the market and the prius takes the lion's share.

These are still high numbers compared to the cars they are replacing and may be a reason that hybrids are not selling that well. Focus also has one that gets 40, and a hybrid and ev version coming. We should know more about hybrid sales this summer when incentives die down a little, the sonata, civic, leaf, and volt are shipping in quantity, and we know more about libya and oil prices.
