Not only that icon of the Japanese landscape, but probably to include one or more of the offshore volcanoes too... the amount of land displacement, and the geological records strongly indicate this will lead to another disaster for the island nation...

    They are soooo hosed.

Maybe one of his many scary prognostications will be right some day. Hopefully not.

It is moving all the time, even without quakes. See [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_motion"]Polar Motion[/ame] for more pointers.

This plot, of motion over the past six years, is about 45 feet across. Friday's quake should have bumped it just four inches.

It happened in the missing hour of "springing ahead" for Daylight Savings Time which means that it didn't happen at all.
    Spooky.

I always wondered whether the big nuclear bomb tests such as the Russians Tsar Bomb so near the north pole could be powerful enough to knock the earth off axis? Or are they small fry and insignificant in the scheme of things?

The Tsar Bomb produced about an 8.35. That was big, but a lot less than this one.

I was wondering if Lucy Liu would blow. She's not Japanese, but we don't need to be overly picky.

 are you talking about the lunar perigee thing Bra...

    That is the 19th...

It could happen then too... it IS in the window. and the tidal forces imparted by the additional lunar gravity may help to trigger that... I had mentioned that in another thread some time ago regarding earthquake probability... and my predictions...
