I totally agree. The technological inovations of the Magdalenian period produced a much improved tool kit over say Gravettian but that technology came at a price. MASS EXTINCTION! After those cavemen melted all the ice the poor Pleistocene megafauna died out. I wish Greenpeace was around back then. :(

    /sarcasm off

I say educate our kids and adults so they can get into a better career and stop wasting time with antiquated technology before we fall even further behind....

Dollars and sense do not justify a Prius over a Corolla.

The differences in MSRP amount to about 9K as well , from $7400 comparing low end models to $10920 for the high end models , and that's before the customary discounts for a Corolla.

On the other hand, it can't be discounted as a cause.
    Unfortunately, the Glory failed.

I don't expect Berkeley to have a balanced view of GCC just like I don't expect the "regulars" here to have a balanced view of the Prius.

I don't see how you guys are coming up with these numbers. You can't just take lowest model to lowest model and so forth. You have to take similarly equipped vehicles ... no matter their position in the lineup.

Even the base Prius is a very well equipped car. The base Corolla is NOT. You would have to attempt to similarly equip a Corolla to the standard equipment on the Prius II in order to have a fair comparison. Is it fair to compare a vehicle with manual windows and a manual transmission in ultra-base form to a base Prius just because they're the 'base' model ? Or should you try to equip the cars similarly and THEN compare the prices ?

Geez ... this isn't rocket science ... it's just common sense. THe difference is NOT 9 or 10 K.

Making things up again? FYI, the lowest model Corolla is a CE, not a LE, the lowest model Civic is a DX, not a LX. The truecar link clearly shows mid models, not base model pricing. All mid models Corollas and Civics are fully equipped with power everything. Sure you get a little more in the Prius, but with the exception of the hybrid system, you sure get a lot more options for your money, automatic headlights and finger waving door opening abilities for the extra $9k ... Wow!!!!

Given the current situation in Japan and the Prius, only a fool would pay the sticker price and all applicable taxes and fees and not explore the other cost effective options on the market now. Don't need to be rocket scientist to figure this out.

Point taken but going down that path ends up being a subjective judgement. Here's an example. Some drivers actually prefer manual transmissions so the base-model Corolla in that regard is "worth more" to them than the "high end" model. Similarly, power everything is nice except when they stop working at which point the manual crank is preferable, so for those who intend to drive the car for a long time, the base model is better. Unneeded and unwanted "high end" features (e.g. fancy LED/HID lights, fancy key fobs etc) actually devalue the car which has them.

It's just an objective way of looking at it.

I would have bought a corolla in a heartbeat if it had a hatch and decent seats. I wanted leather and was not going aftermarket -- the corolla was lower and cheaper feeling. Now one car almost made my list in spite of it being a sedan. The 2011 ford focus sel with leather and roof was 7k less than the prius. Had everything and handled fine. It was way better than the corolla and civic I tested and cheaper. Didn't want a trunk and issues with my high value trade-in would have made a deal difficult. Traded even up for the prius. Glad I got the prius IV -- roomy with a nice ride and of course, spectacular mpg. In august, the lots were full and dealing easy.

Keyword being manmade, the earth has undergone warming and cooling trends throughout the millenia, with or without the presence of mankind. I love how mental midgets resort to personal attacks when their world of pseudoscience is falling all around them.

I see. So, apparently you're a mental midget as you were personally attacking him. LOL!

Oh, BTW, Prius production is starting up again on Monday. I THOUGHT that was what this thread was about when I saw the title.

I paid around $5000 more for the Prius than a LE Corolla. It will take at least 50,000 miles to break even at todays gas prices. If the great Obumer gets reelected gas could very well reach $7 a gallon if he gets his way.Everything we buy will skyrocket as energy prices go up.If that happens payback will be much sooner. Also the Prius and other toyotas are non Union made and that alone may cause a shortage as our present government tries another attempt to slow down Toyota sales to help Government Motors sell their Chevy Volt. With problems in the middle east and no drilling here and many years from away from a new energy source to fuel our cars prices will go much higher.

Sigh. Why couldn't you stop after your first sentence? Please take your ignorance and hate to the Fred's House of Pancakes thread, where you can whine about our president or whatever other topic you are uninformed on.

One thing for sure...with this and rising gas prices it's time to get a theft alarm for your Prius!

It's no pseudoscience. Sure, natural warming trends via increasing solar radiation is partly responsible for global warming, but greenhouse gasses, the manmade issue at stake, is the real culprit and reason why solar radiation isn't escaping this time around.

Here's a quick science lesson: Greenhouse gasses absorb heat and energy from solar radiation and in turn make the earth's surface temperature warmer, aka global warming. Where do greenhouse gases come from? The release of CO2, N2O, and other hydrocarbons from electricity, manufacturing, transportation, etc. Sounds pretty manmade to me.

Been watching BBC's doc 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' ? (which has been thoroughly debunked btw...) go read .....

    www.epa.gov

    www.eia.gov

    www.ipcc.ch

and all other authoritative websites regarding climate change ... keeping in mind these authorities have access to the NOAA, NASA, US Army, Navy, .... and other intergovernmental bodies that actually know what they're talking about unlike retarded hot air balloon media / public opinion bimbos who don't know s^&t.

And if you think they're all BSin' us, then you declare the world authorities to be FOS.

We are adding 4 billion metric tons CO2, net, after earth's sink of CO2, per year due to burning FF's.

Every gas car sucks in 21 lbs of oxygen and spews out 20 lbs CO2 per friggen gallon burned! ...

    (5.5 lbs carbon / gallon) x 43 / 12 = 20 lbs CO2

Don't tell me you can't figure out the above equation, it's 9th grade science.

Go read up, then we'll talk.

There will be a lot of whiners from both sides of the isle when gas hits $7.A lot of good democrats turned on Carter because of the gas shortage back then and it was not entirely his fault. If gas does get a lot higher I hope it forces the big three and Toyota to start downsizing their pickup trucks or replace them with a Prius or the concept A-BAT. Back on topic. There is already a shortage of Prius.Just try to find one.

We bought a Prius II on March 6th. Dealer had about 6-7 on the lot.

Stopped by on the 23rd to drop off paperwork and there were no Prii on the lot. They had no idea when they would get any.

Ok, first off, don't compare Corolla to Prius on anything ....

compare Corolla Matrix to Prius, the 1.8L w/ automatic. It is MSRP $19,490 w/ carpet mats. 28 MPG is midway city/hwy mileage.

Prius Two is exactly $24,010 w mats for $4,520 delta

    assuming $3 / gallon gas, $/mi = (3/28) - (3/50) = 66/1400 ($/mi)

    # miles = $4520(66/1400) = 95,878 miles to make up $4,520 difference.

Note: this Matrix has - no smart key, no push button start and no cruise control, it's a compact and the front seats kinda suck. Prius front / back seating whups its butt.
