I understand why you did it and I don't see anything wrong with it. It's your car and your money so as long as you're happy that is all that matters. :)

I disagree with your opinion on the Prius appearance but I sold import performance parts for 10yrs and always thought those customers had horrific taste. Maybe because I raced high horsepower domestics at the time but whatever. I only ask people for honest accounting because posts on PC can influence other people's purchases.

I'll let you do the math on this one:

On this same exact trip, going from Fontana to Diamond Bar, doing the same speed, I would average around 45 mpg with my stock setup. The drive also included several miles of stop-and-go city driving.

I started with a completely full tank before I left and refilled when I got back.

    4 - 6 mpg loss right?

Unfortunately you did not provide critical information like ambient temps, wind speed and direction, condition of stock tires vs. new tires, total circumference, driving style, oil level, etc.. The fact you have a bladder fuel tank system totally excludes your use of gallons pumped for the calculation as well.

I could easily make up a number for my baseline then go about using hypermiling techniques to improve that number just to try and prove a point. ;)

The simple fact that nearly everyone that has gone about making careful observations after swapping to a larger, heavier, stickier tire has lost MPG and in the case of Scion wheel/tire combo, a lot of MPG. If you are claiming no net loss or even an improvement then you are an anomaly and very lucky. I'm not going to argue this subject any further because I don't believe you are a liar and I am not interested in calling you one. I've observed the effect of larger stickier tires on my own car and so have numerous others over the years. The consensus is you will loss MPG with the larger combo unless test conditions are seriously manipulated to favor the larger combo. *shrug*

This weekend I did a trial fit the 17" OZ Superlegarras on my Prius. and it was an epic fail. I tried to put the front one on and the rim sticked out about an inch outwards I guess 17x8 rims with 35mm offset it too much :)

    Haha.

There's always fender flares (but I bet you'll lose some aero advantage):

The rims are definitely not my style :) If I have the extra cash, next time I need tires I'm going with some gunmetal/dark grey/ black rims as well (my prius is light silver)

BUT!! I love the clear front marker lenses! I will keep an eye open for them...

Maybe I will experiment with different color led bulbs (green?) through the amber lens. I'm looking for something "a little different", without attracting attention from the law. If I do, I will share pictures.

Everybody wish me warm welcomes and gooey cookies! :D (post #1- I've been lurking for a few hours so... hello)

Hi all! Excuse my english, I don't speak very well because I'm french, but I visit your forum since I have my 08 Prius bought on december 2010.
I would like 17" rims on my Prius, and I love bu08usc11 ones. What is the size of these tires?
    Thank you!

Most people go with a 17 x 7 inches wheel and either a 205/50/17 or 215/45/17 tire. Look for a tire that is listed as low rolling resistance. If you put a high performance tire on the Prius, your MPG will drop a lot.

Off the top of my head they are 215/45/17. Love them.

thanks a lot! I'll think about that.
Actually I have 16" rims, whith 195/55/16, I'm a little bit afraid about upgrading to 215/45 or maybe 205/45, but I love these momo win 2. Good choice bu08usc11!

You might try garnering more information on the rolling resistance of stock tyres and comparing them with his before condemning it out of hand.

From eyeballing the feelings about the stock tyre setup here the overall feeling I come away with is that theyre (like most stock tryres) a cheap POS.

Tyres are the single best modification you can make with a car, and the performance aspects involved are a good deal more to consider then just a wheel weight mpg centric view, and thats one thats just about accelerations anyway. What if one were to look at it from the viewpoint of safety?

In the deepest technical analysis we ought also be considering al weather driving, road temperatures, tyre pressures, vehicle loading and test environment, but this isnt that sort of thing is it.

This forum is in such a place that any information could be considered worthwhile, whereas all you are doing is (whether you realise it or not) shutting down chat you dont like the size of, over an issue that you (and others) tried and that on your reconnaissance didnt work out. But it just could be there is more to it than that... it just could be there is something in this situation to learn here

    if you began with 185-65-15
then the closest 17" equivalent is 215-45-17
a 205-50-17 would be 2.40% (vs the 215-45 at 0.61%) too fast due to difference in rolling diameter, perhaps thats an issue and perhaps its not

my advice on these matters would be to find a tyre of the right size that you can live with, and then find rims to suit. But yes examining the LRR would be a good start
