It's been a major struggle but I'm whittling down resistance on a second Prius, this would be a G2 most likely.

California aside, the hybrid warranty on a G2 is 8 years/100k, correct? Fully transferable? And that includes battery and inverter?

As I understand it, if the car that you are looking at was originally sold (to the original owner) in New York, the California warranty (150K) applies.

    Perhaps others can clarify.

The CA warranty applies in NY...?

It seems CA does get that awesome warranty but the rest of us don't.

Actually, it applies to several (CARB) states:

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_emission_standards]United States emission standards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Check the Warranty Statement in the owners manual. Also, ask for a CARFAX to see where the car was initially registered.

I know that I have the 150K warranty (I've only got 28K left on it) and I purchased the car in Rochester, NY.

I found this thread by searching for 'inverter' because my '05 Prius gave me the "check engine" light last Saturday. The Toyota tech said the code indicated difficulty with the inverter (this, after they had just replaced the HV coolant pump under a recall). They were unable to get the car to reproduce the problem, but in the course of our conversation the Toyota tech mentioned that my car (less than 7 years old and with 90k) was no longer under warranty and that a new inverter would cost about $3,500.

Did they tell you what the code was?

Your Toyota tech was WRONG about the warranty for the inverter. The inverter is part of the Hybrid System and is therefore covered under the Hybrid System Warranty for 96 months/100,000 miles (longer in California and CARB states). Here's a screen cap from my warranty booklet:

I think a lot of dealerships don't know (or don't care) and just auto-deny on warrany claims, so you need to call up corporate. I had one deny an oil gasket leak on a Mazda last year under powertrain. The guy said the leak wasn't under powertrain. I was like whaaaaaaaat, called up Mazda and of course it was, so they made the stealership do it.

So there are many carb states and New York is one of them. It does indeed seem like this hybrid warranty is good for 10 years and 150k. That means that if I buy, say, a 2006 with 100k I've still got another 5 years at my usage (second car) of hybrid warranty. That is awesome!

EDIT: Actually, the key thing appears to be WHEN did New York become a carb state? I still can't tell, since this Prius I'm thinking about was registered here first. I have the VIn, I should just call toyota.

Yeah, this is key, though. When buying a Prius of this vintage an extra 50k on the hybrid warranty is no joke. I do need to find out when it was, google is failing me!

Just called Toyota. For the 2006 I asked about and gave him its VIN, this car was first registered in NY, a CARB state, in March/April 06. He said inverter is 8 years, 100k. However, hybrid battery is 10 years/150k.
