Last night there was an item on a tv program (similar to "cops" but dutch version and far less extreme) about a man who broke into a house and stole the keys of a prius. When a police officer on a motorbike spotted him in the prius he started to flee and (somehow) managed to get away from the motorpolice (impressive) But later he crashed with high speed into a tree and died..

Quite impressive, I've never heard of a Prius getting stolen! Has anyone heard about other prius getting stolen? I thought it would be very difficult to steal one because how do you hotwire an electric engine? But unfortanately carthieves nowadays dont even bother and just brake into houses and steal the keys..:(

Thinking of a Gen 3, the only way to steal a Prius without the FOB is to take it out on a flatbed truck. Since there's no conventional starter/ignition, it can't be "hot-wired". I'm sure others will comment with ways to possibly steal a Prius. Maybe they'd be speaking from experience. :D

Couldn't agree more. I'm sure some will come to his defence and how a life lost over a stolen car just isn't worth it, but in my books he's a bad un and got what was coming to him. And no, I don't want to know his history.

Well it happened in a city where the speed limit is 50 km/h (or about 30mph) but you can bet he wasn't driving at that speed:) I guess more like double the speed limit (so about 100km/h or 60 mph) or maybe even faster.

You can do a man-in-the-middle attack involving radio relays back to the fob, but that isn't exactly a garden variety method of theft. A flatbed truck is still the best option.

Looks like he hit the tree sideways, rather than head-on.

If it was months ago during the Toyota "fiasco", the Press probably would have stated "Driving the Prius kills man" :)

    another Darwin award contestant.

the OP said the thief broken into the home and stole the keys, so that is how he was able to get it started.

Well obviously he was going over a pothole while braking. We all know the traction control engages the engine at high RPM to rocket forward the car in this scenario.

    </sarcasm>
