Thanks! I had it diagnosed at Power toyota in tempe. I was driving on the freeway on Thursday when the large exclamation red light, the brake light, the vsf? (can't remember exact letters) and the red car on the navigation system came on. The car continued to run fine, but I took it immediately to the dealership. It continued to run fine and kept starting fine when it was moved around the dealership. I'm picking it up this morning, so I'll have the paperwork to post the exact diagnosis they stated me. They said a salvage transmission was not a good idea.

Sorry to here that your Easter was not a good one but like other people have posted I would disconnect the negative cable from 12 volt battery to reset computer and see if that fixes all your warning lights across your dash if your inverter pump took a crap on you hopefully you haven't utilized the inverter pump recall for your prius. As far as boyfriend is concerned I hope he has deep pockets to pay for any repairs!!

If the car is continuing to run "fine" despite the warning lights then I strongly recommend you get a second opinion (from an independent hybrid specialist if possible) before handing over $4000 to get the transaxle exchanged.

Keep in mind that OP's 2006 Prius has over 236k miles.

It is possible that the her Bf (ex?) ran out of gas also. After the warning lights came on, he was able to drive it up to 24 mph on the HV battery. He may have ran it down and possibly damaged the HV battery as well.

Sorry about it. Have an expert look at it and let the responsible person pay for it.

When you post the diagnosis and DTC pls also post your car's odometer reading.

If "the car continued to run fine" then I would question whether the transaxle (aka transmission) needs to be replaced. The DTC will help to shed light on the situation.

The reason that the dealer is not encouraging installation of a salvage part is because they will not warrant its continued performance. You'll be on the hook for the installation labor charge regardless of whether the part works. Of course the salvage part is substantially cheaper than a new part so you'll have to decide whether the risk is worth taking or not.

MA, always look on the bright side of life. Your Easter may have been sucky but it pales in comparision to the first guy's.

I'm not going to pretend that I know what all is wrong with your car but I'd start by checking the stupid/cheap stuff. How old is the 12v battery & what are the voltages? Does your car qualify for the inverter pump recall?

You don't need me to tell you that your BF has no respect for property or for you. Sooner or later he will pop you in the face after spending your money. You are too good for him & you can do much better.

    Keep us posted.

Well the dealership called me today... Turns out it's my HVAC system. It failed to go from hybrid to fuel or something. I'm sure you all know what that is. He ordered the part and it'll be there tomorrow. Total after taxes is $482 and some change. Still reading the catalytic converter code but he priced that at $1,700 here as well. Still don't have the money to go to a cheaper shop which he recommended but atleast my car is still fine. It'll be up and running in no time.

Yes, he has a Chevy C1500 truck so of course we take my car everywhere for the better gas mileage.

He has a job as well, as a pipe fitter but lately he's only been able to work 40 hours a week and his checks are crap and go straight towards rent and what not.

That's good news, I guess, compared to what it could have been. Coolant pumps and inverters are much more expensive than HVACs. Whatever they are - sounds like Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning to me, and I don't know how that would cause what you experienced. But there are plenty of smart, technical people here who will enlighten us, I'm sure.

Too bad about the chocolate. I'm just about finished my 70% Mr McGregor from yesterday, so I'll have your share if you don't want it. :)

By all means, help yourself to my share of the chocolate. Just indulge and enjoy with the thought of me in your mind. Then I'll feel like I experienced the pleasure you did.

I'm pretty sure he said HVAC.. He said the system that changes from hybrid to fuel failed. So, I could be wrong. But, I already miss my car. lol

Well, hopefully you appreciate the sentiment, at least. Do you drink coffee? I can offer soy milk and honey in it if you like. How about a nice red pepper? Maybe some fresh snow peas? :)

Ahh, common ground at last. Broccoli it is. Raw, I presume? That's OK, I like it better that way, too.

Now that we've taken care of snack time, can anybody confirm a gas/electric switch in the HVAC? Did you get any codes from the shop, Melissa?

I'll take it raw with some ranch to dip it in, or steamed with teriyaki sauce! I'll take it anyway you want to give it to me.

I didn't get any codes from him, it was just a quick conversation. Hopefully I can pick the car up tomorrow so I will have a copy of the paperwork and all.
