I wasn't getting my hopes up in case things fell through, but...
DH just got a call from our salesman - my car is in NY and on its way! I actually have a VIN of my own.

So, the way this is gonna work is we're renting a car, driving to DC/MD where the dealer is. Good excuse to visit friends too (used to live there). From the dealer, we will drive the Prius to upstate NY (5 1/2 hours), visit with my family who I haven't seen many of in a coupla years, then drive back to Jax, FL - obviously a lot of miles right away. So, what should I do, or not do, during this period? How long is a break-in normally? My understanding is that during the break-in you shouldn't exceed 60 mph; is that correct? Are there other things to be aware of?

I've printed and saved a lot of posts with details about driving the car, and changing the oil, and changing settings, and maximizing mpg, so I thank all of you for the tremendous help you've been!

Yea, avoid the hard accelleration, hard braking, exceeding 60mph or so for the first 600 miles. Don't panic if the check engine light comes on, just keep driving unless there seems to be a problem, it should go off in 100-150 miles as the soot and such blow out of the O2 sensor.

Check the oil level when you take delivery--make sure it's not above the full line AT ALL--if it is make them drain it to just below the full mark. Check the tire pressures (bring a guage) and even consider bringing a little compressor and add air to get up to about 42 psi in front and 40 psi in the rear--esp. important if you're driving as much as you plan to.

Don't let the dealership disuade you from checking this stuff.

    Have fun, great little car.

Thanks, Evan! I'll print this out and add it to my folder. And I'll bring my gauge... sold my old Saturn so all the car stuff is in a neat little pile. The oil I'd read about, but wouldn't have thought to check it at the dealer... I'll add that to the pickup checklist I have printed.

I normally wouldn't have worried a lot about checking the oil at the dealer except that you'll be doing a lot of driving and it's very common that it's over filled slightly and with several hundred miles of driving in the first few days it could, potentially, do some damage and definately would affect milage....not worth waiting IMO.

    Congrats, Sandpiper!

It's always good to hear about someone with a good buying experience - goes to show that if you're flexible with pick-up location, colors, etc, that you can make your dream a reality much quicker :)

Be sure to let us know how the extended trip is - sounds like a good trip to become accustomed to your new car!

BTW Sandpiper....why not extend the trip a bit more and take it down to Coastal Dave for the Integrated XM install!!! Heck, in NY you can get Jon to do it at PRIUSXM even.

Congrats!! I know you can't wait to get it. I just recieved my Vin# yesterday. My car is currently in Jacksonville, Fl (I am on St. Simons Island, Ga) and it should be heading this way any day now. I ordered it the second week in October. But like you I was not getting my hopes up that it would come in before Feb. so I was very happy to know that it is in the country and the wait is almost over.
Enjoy your trip and new car.

Enjoy the trip! Getting the Prius after having access to all the info posted here sure has to be better than those of us who got them early and had to learn the hard way. Of course, I would not have wanted to endure the wait. Hope your trip goes well.

*lol* Lived in Beaufort, SC for 18 mos. Columbia has a great organic mill (flours and grits) that's nationally known. But the hiking gear shop closes too early!

Now that would be a trip, wouldn't it??! :) I could just put off going for my Master's and travel the States with my Prius... you think Toyota would subsidize? ;-)

That was indeed the idea! :)

I'll post when I get back - I'm not sure how much access I'll have while on the road! But yeah, I hope to figure out at least a few of the features!

Thanks, Jerry! I sure do appreciate the experience of those who have gone before (pun intended)... :)

  17. OK. My turn. I grew up in South Carolina but now live in the Hoosier state. After you swing by South Carolina, can you drive up to Indianapolis? It's only about 700 miles from Columbia. Let me know as I am holding my breath!

Ok, let go now (no turning blue allowed...). I'd love to come to Indy; have several hiking friends there and I've never been.. but it won't happen any time soon. However, if you still don't have a Prius in a year, get back to me...

  19. Yes Indeed!!! I Now Feel the Excitement!!

My dealer called about 30 minutes ago. He is going to sell one of his two track cars to me!! Gold or Silver?? I have my choice. These major decisions are killing me! I put my name on the waiting list November 10th....now I have one, or so it seems.
