Apple groupie that I am, I watched the keynote of WWDC today. Somewhat to my surprise, I thought the iOS 5 part was the most interesting overall, although I was intrigued by the music library offer of iCloud.

But back to iOS 5 ...
A good UI for notifications was long overdue, and iOS 5 has a nice one. The feature I was most impressed with for its utility and creativity though is in all things the lowly to-do list. Some smart chap added location awareness to each item. So now e.g. if I add tomatoes to my grocery list and tag Walmart, and add peppers and tag our fav oriental market, when I arrive at the market I will receive an alert reminding me what to buy there. I don't have to remember to look at the list, and I don't have to filter lists.

I have thought for a while now that my use of a computer is part content consumption, and part secretary. The secretary remains quite attractive, and has just become smarter.

To be honest, most of the features advertised for iOS 5 have been available for awhile on jailbroken iPhones. Sometimes, Apple even hires the devs for jb apps, most recently seen here: http: //modmyi.com/content/4542-apple-hires-jailbreak-developer-notifications-likely-suck-less-now.html (remove the space, can't post URL's yet)

I wouldn't knock the new iCloud offerings. I think they probably bring as much as any of the other iOS improvements. Being able to set up a new device with just your apple ID is awesome. No more syncing. Automatically pushing purchases across devices. Automatically pushing photos from your iPhone to your computer. These are all going to end up changing the way we use and interact with our devices, dramatically simplifying everything.

Interestingly, some friends and I did a similar thing back in school. This was before iPhones, but we all had multiple computers and had information, documents, and movies we wanted synced between them. So, we created PIMPSS - Portable Information Manager Personal Synchronization Server. Essentially, you ran a client application (written in Java) which automatically uploaded changes to the server, which stored diffs and pushed the changes out to the rest of your devices. It was even expandable by simply writing new modules and dragging the JAR's onto the client. I knew we should have had the idea patented!
