Re: Performance of 3rd generation vs. 2nd generation, which one is really faster?
    Neither. ;)

Are we talking faster or quicker?
Zero to 60....or 1/4 mile ET's...or terminal velocity?

Yeah....it'd be fun to put a G2 and a G3 on a track for an afternoon I guess. People in the US race lawn tractors too.
Just don't expect too much excitement down at the local pub when you're hoisting pints to celebrate breaking into the 16's with your Prius.

My G3 is faster than my Sierra...but only because the speed limiter is (currently) enabled in the latter, and AFAIK the former does not have one....mostly because it does not need one. Put both of them on a drag strip?

    Naaaah.

Note to supervisor: "My" (your) G3 has never been over the posted speed limit.....as far as you know. :D I'm basing my observations on documented performance characteristics for each. :)
Note to spouse: Same goes for my (your) Sierra. ;)

My initial butt dyno when I first drove the car in March 2009 was that the 2010 was faster, especially in the mid-range acceleration (40-50) range. The difference isn't all THAT obvious though.

Out of all of them, the generation that gave the most "instantaneous" response was the 1st gen. There's no inverter step-up, it's just mash and insta-torque. With the 2nd gen especially, and somewhat w/ the 3rd gen, there's a slight delay.

With the 2nd gen specifically, there's the spool up of the engine before MG1 "takes hold" which yields in a sudden boost of acceleration. This may make the car seem faster.

What we really need is someone with a G-Tech or some sort of android app to measure a 0-60 in both cars with a "full" battery SOC, pre-warmed engine, and a reasonably cool day. The total time is important, but more important is the acceleration curve that gets the car there.

FWIW, here's what Consumer Reports got in their testing (to help w/reducing variance when "bench racing" between various publication/testers). All speeds are in mph.

The video was created as a joke.

Everyone knows that you cannot come to any quantitative conclusion by drag racing two cars that are so similar in performance. This is especially true when you have two different drivers AND have no data to back the conclusion up. Reaction time is all when it comes to drag racing similarly performing cars. :)

This is a good example of what i am talking about. I have a lot more power and 1/4 mile potential than this Buick Grand National but since he beat me in reaction time, he was way out in front of me for half the race. If this were an 1/8th mile track he would have beat me. This is all because he had a much better reaction time than I did, not because his car was faster than my truck. Because I was faster overall and had enough track length to catch up my HP won the race. Now imagine doing this same race with 2 Prius with nearly the same performance and one guy with a bad reaction time. :)

Seemingly both took of at the same time, but you can clearly see how the 3rd Gen pulled away as speed increases. Btw how did you come to the conclusion that the video was a joke???

Because they posed the GenII driver as an Italian "Stig". This is based of the The Stig from Top Gear. The other joke is that they tried to create a definitive conclusion with poor scientific methods. :) I'm not denying the GenIII is faster, although a GenII with OEM 15s vs. a GenIII V would be a close race.

So, part of the "joke" is to have the Gen 2 lose??? Funny...no pun intended. In fact, the race was even early until the Gen 3 pulled away. Reaction time had NOTHING to do with why Gen 2 lost. You're right...Gen 3 with 15 rims may be faster...TOYOTA repeatedly stated that Gen 3 is ONE second faster to 60 mph than Gen 2. Again, for those who can't comprehend, TOYOTA said it, not me!

I think I am going to stop replying to your posts. You have a slight attitude problem that I'd rather not deal with. :(

F8l by now you should know that any discussion about genII vs GenIII is pointless discussion. There are to many trolls on this site that cannot accept peoples opinion if it differs from there's. Again who really gives a flying F@#k which is faster. With Prius it should be a competition to which gets better fuel economy real world not epa estimates.

    I know, Stefano. :)

I love all in the Prius family and don't want to take part in any "my car is better than your car" battles. We're all in the "cool kid club" because we are driving a Prius no matter the year or model.
