I paid $138.70 at a parts counter today, and found that the online guys are now showing $138.70 for this part number. Phew, all is right with the world again.

Yup, glad that your parts counter has finally received word about the price reduction.

My guess is that some Toyota cost accounting staffer entered the wrong standard cost in the parts cost-plus pricing model, which resulted in the inflated price that was in effect.

It's still unclear why the part number even changed since the physical appearance, the supplier (GS Yuasa), and the supplier part number of the 21171 battery appears to be exactly the same as the 21170 battery.

I spent a few frustrating days trying to track down locally available battery alternatives with little success. Then the battery died so I called AAA Road Service (in Silicon Valley) for a jump start. Turns out the AAA battery truck stocks a direct fit Prius replacement! So I now have a new battery with a 36 month free + 36 months pro-rated replacement warranty that was installed on the spot in about 30 minutes, all for $131. If you're a AAA member I recommend checking this out.

Can you please post the make and model of it? It might fit but might be a flooded lead acid battery instead of the recommended AGM battery.

I've reviewed the Optima Website and they appear to make it should "fairly" easy to change batteries even for a novice. Any opinions from those who decided on the Optima but wasn't 100% confident about doing it themselves?

I am setting up to put a battery maintainer on my 12V and wonder is it a flooded? Or AGM or Gel? The BatteryMinder has 3 setting to choose from.

by this do you mean that someone who isn't terribly good with mechanical things could do it without much swearing? Years ago I had little or no trouble changing an exact-fit Camry battery but when I had to adjust something on a new Volvo battery I declared never again.

I have a fair assortment of tools but can't assume I have anything specific to this task.

    Thanks very much.

If your assortment of tools includes metric sockets and open/box end wrenches then you should be good to go. However you should remove the hatch floor trim so that you can see the battery and visualize what will be required to access it. Basically, you need to remove the vent duct over the battery and unbolt the brake power supply so that it can be moved out of the way.

honestly... i've rigged up a civic battery because... i could.. it performs very well but the had to modify the connections.

even if I did a direct swap, it's not fun to do. i have pretty nimble hands and between the vents, and battery straps, it's kinda a real pain.

How can I tell if my 12V battery needs replaced? Will my ScanGauge give me any info? I would hate to replace it if it's unnecessary.

    Thanks!

Got the following voltage data. The car has been sitting for approx 18 hours:

12.3 - accessory mode (nothing on)
    11.7- lights on
    11.4- rear window heater on
11.1- lights & rear window heater on together

Was reading the voltage should be between 12.6 and 11.9, so at 12.3 I guess I'm doing OK.

I decided to replace mine with the Optima for $200 at Advance Auto Parts. Ordered it and got it the next day.

My local Toyota dealers (in South FL) all have the 28800-21171 battery for $191.81 plus tax. Is this the new normal or have others found it cheaper from a dealer?
