Gen5 Nav plug and play upgrade?

    I just bought an '06 Prius. I think Package 1, so no navigation.
    Could I switch out the display and install OEM Navigation, or are there other factors that can't be overlooked?
    I tried posting a link to an Ebay auction but I'm too new. It's part #86110-47220 for $795. Wondering if that'd be all I'd need.
    Thanks for any info.

    Well, that's the display. Then you'll need the DVD drive, the wiring harness if they're not all the same, GPS antennas, bluetooth microphone and wiring (for voice control), etc, etc.

    Get a Garmin - better performance and 1/10 the price! Trust me, I have both.

    I would beg to differ on the performance of aftermarket vs OEM but that's another thread. To install the OEM nav you will need the following:

    JBL 6 disk changer
    JBL amp
    JBL speaker (optional)
    Nav multi function display
    Nav computer
    Steering wheel controls for nav Blutooth
    Roof console with microphone
    Wiring, lots and lots of wiring.

    I did the install in our '08 and it fairly straightforward if you are confident at reading wiring diagrams.

    You can install the OEM system but then you are stuck with trying to get updates. This is why most people choose to go aftermarket. It is easier to get updates and you get all the other cool options like apps, USB, DVD, better sound quality, expandability, etc..

    Thanks a lot for the replies. I have a TomTom, and it stinks. Had good luck with Magellan before so I might go that route. I just like nice, clean, original looking installs. But not absolutely necessary I s'pose.

    I have used a Garmin and have a TomTom, but also have the in-dash in both an '07 Prius and an '08 Camry Hybrid. I like the in dash LOTS better. Much easier to use than the Garmin or the TomTom. Compared to the in dash, they are a pain in the neck. I know, I will get lots of flack for that, but I don't care, I'm the one using them.

    I agree with your statement that the factory nav is better. I have 2 Garmins in the other vehicles and the Prius nav is much easier to see and use, once you get used to it. It also has some features that aren't available in the Garmins, like freeway exits showing what services are available. That's my story and I am sticking to it.
