or at the grocery store? We probably overpay, but we pay $4.50 for organic stone crushed honey wheat bread per loaf at the local Great Harvest Bread bakery. It's a franchise, but still the bread is baked locally if that matters in any scheme of anything. I do have to make a specific effort to get to this store, though I will shop at the grocery store next door to get my other items. Worth it? Or is it typical yuppie organic shi shi behavior?

We occasionally buy bread from a place owned by a husband and wife who buy their own ingredients and bake their own bread. It's absolutely delicious. We enjoy the bread and supporting their locally-owned endeavor.

They also have other vegetarian and vegan bakery goods which are also meticulously hand made and equally delicious.

We used to do that. I got lazy, plus I didn't really enjoy doing it.

I learned to bake bread at a young age, and when I got lazier after a few decades, used a bread maker. It wasn't quite the same, but it's definitely more convenient. Due to a major change in diet about 10 years ago, I rarely eat the stuff any more. Whatever kind it is the rest of the family eats, it looks healthful, with lots of nuts and seeds. The pasty white stuff isn't good enough for the birds, let alone humans. ;)

If you like using a breadmaker but don't like the paddles baked into the bottom of the loaf, simply take the bread out of the machine when it's ready to start its final rise and bake cycle. Knead the dough out on the floured counter and remove the paddle (or paddles, if you have a horizontal breadmaker). This accomplishes two things, no paddles baked into the bread and a much smoother uniform, ie professional looking loaf. You can also use oats, sunflower seeds, etc instead of just flour and make slits to fancy up your homemade loaf.

    Yes to the question.

Wonder if a poll can be added to this thread?

I hear what you're saying, but most of the convenience of a breadmaker is tossing in the ingredients and setting the timer for the morning. :)

Oh, you don't want to do that. Once you've developed that habit, you might have to stop eating 'food' that comes in boxes and cans, and eat only things that don't need a list of ingredients. ;)

    ^ Marie ?

In cooler weather most of the bread is homemade by hand. Pita, specifically.
I bought a zujirushi bread maker but I like European type bread and have not been satisfied with the results. This year I'll try part breadmaker, part manual.

I obtain my bread from an one eyed old hermit lady that lives in the darkest part of the woods. Her bread isn't particularly good, and I'm pretty sure it contains hair and what appears to be pieces of teeth or bone...but I'm assured it's organic, and if I stop buying from her? I will be cursed in unimaginable ways...

That is the hope, yes. I am getting there. Simple method is to just avoid the central sections of the grocery, and just walk around the outside edge.

I make my own, although like some I sometimes let the bread maker do all the hard stuff. We don't go through enough bread to justify buying the pasty white stuff at the store....which really isn't bread at all.
One of the advantages on living down here is that we can get a lot of vegetables, eggs and such from friends and neighbors.
"Organic" is just a fancy word for how most of my neighbors have been doing things all along. ;)

A vegetarian diet based on food staples (not the metal kind :) ) is sensible, tasty, frugal, environmental, and healthy. We very rarely buy cans, and more important to me, severely cut down plastics use.

I don't eat bread that much, but when I do, I buy it from Whole Foods ($2.29).
