we own a 2005 prius II that I really love, it is our only car, we bought it 2 years ago used, absolutely no issues, few scratches, 92K.
Let's say we were to move to a place where we could not take the car.
Move would be minimum 18 months.
I really don't want to sell this car as I really wanted to drive it to the ground and at least try to reach the 200K miles club, but.. is that the best option?
We sold our first gen fit (our first nice car) a while ago and always regretted it, got another one that as a lemon after that, so now that I have a car I love, I don't want to sell but it would be not so great for the car to leave unused (stored at our family's) for so long right?
I know we would get the electric battery maintenance thingy and try to have it started and running very so often..
    Thoughts?

May be a family member can use it for occasional grocery runs for 18 months?

I would not expect either battery to last 18 months with no activity, so you would have about $2000 in repairs with a reinvolt HV battery and an optima yellowtop 12 volt.

You sound like fugitives or international spies. 18 months huh? Why did you sell your first car, were you made? Don't want to store it at your family's because the car will be traced to them? I wish I could help you but we can't do this over public airwaves.

    PM sent.

Well let me offer an opinion that might be unpopular. You are talking a minimum of a Year and 1/2...

Well storing a Prius is not impossible but it's problematic for that long a period.

So despite the fact you love the vehicle? I'm just going to be unpopular and say, I think I'd sell it...

A year and a 1/2 maybe more....is a long time. You can always buy another Prius when your situation changes. Plus in a year 1/2 or more...I'm expecting a lot more options within the Hybrid world...options you might be interested in...

You could go with paying for storage, trickle chargers...family members or friends..checking on it...

Storing it, certainly is possible....but is it necessary? I'd sell it...then look forward to buying something new when it was convienent to do so again...

You had a bad experience evidently having a car you liked..then selling and replacing with a "lemon"...but I don't think you make future decisions based on past random bad luck.

If you come back in 2 years? With a little research, and a little luck, you could buy a newer "used" Prius and hopefully be just as happy...maybe even upgrade.

I'm going to vote sell not store...(I won't be insulted if you disagree)

ok, you guys convinced me :) we can use the money for a new car where we go too, which could help.. LOL, we are no international spies..I just don't like giving too much personal info online :)
I definitely dont love the car enough to pay for 2k in new batteries when we come back.
It is a done deal, plus sounds like the used market is going good..
(recent ny times article). We got a good deal on the car, and current kbb value on good would is higher than what we paid for it at the dealer 2 years ago (i am good negotiator, we also made $$ on selling our first used fit 4 yrs ago.)

it is a seller market, would be the best time unload with short supply and high gas prices.

Toyota is promising 2014 plug-in for all models.

sell it and buy another....although i love my own prius and would probably store it just because i know mine is trouble free, fully loaded and looks just the way i want it to look (mod wise)

for the battery, there is also the option of just hooking it up to a charger/maintainer. For the aux battery, that is easy you can buy one nearly anywhere for $25-150. But I have no idea what you would need for a charger/maintainer for the hybrid battery, not good to let it discharge for that long, though. Might want to ask your dealer if Toyota sells a maintainer for the battery for long term storage. You would also want to treat your gas tank, as gas turns into a thick varnish like substance if left too long that can clog your injectors or gas lines. There are ways to do it, the question is whether it is worth it to you. Might be better to just sell, put the money in a 18 month CD and buy soemthing when you get back. for 18 months, if I could find a way to maintain the hybrid battery and I liked the car, I would probly store it.

OK, well I hope the value of it wont drop too much by next year, cause we need the car right now, and we are not going for a year.. The idea of a plugin when we come back sounds great...
