p3030 Code on 2001 Prius Battery that's been replaced

    I have a 2001 Prius and needed to replace the HV battery. I purchased the new one from a salvage yard. It has approx 42k on it. The guy says it was fine when he removed it from the car. When I put it in my car, I get a p3030 code, which is something to do with a circuit not being complete or a busbar module... basically I think something with wiring inside the battery.

    Does anyone have advice? Is it for sure the battery or is there a chance something else causes that p3030 code?

    There are 19 voltage sensors that are connected to a pair of battery module and send signals to the battery ECU. Have you measured them? (Standard voltage: 2V or more)

    It's a problem within the battery pack, but it can be caused by root causes other than what Toyota lists in their trouble trees. Even if the service plug is removed, I don't recommend rooting around underneath the sheetmetal of the battery box unless you are pretty familiar with the component.

    Where did you get the pack? Any external dents?

    I am having a similar problem P3030 and P3001.

    I have replaced the battery ECU with 2 diffrent ones from salvage yards and I still have a problem.

    My 01 Prius has an 8 month old battery pack from Toyota at a cost of $2700.

    I have the cover off the battery the connections look new on the battery pack cells.

    Also when you drive the car and come to a stop the engine starts and stops every 3-5 seconds. odd!

    I have replaced the inverter about 2 weeks ago. sigh! I don't know what else to do.

    Have you verified (using an ohmmeter) that the sense wire connections from the battery modules to the battery ECU are solid?

    Ok so get this.

    I took the service plug out and the negative cable off the 12v battery for about 10mins.

    now i only have P3001 and not P3030, I guess im back to where I started before I got the salvage battery ECU.

    Well, it might take a couple of driving cycles before DTC P3030 will reappear (if there's still something wrong with the battery sense wiring).

    As you know, DTC P3001 indicates a problem with the battery ECU, but you've already replaced that a couple of times. I think you'll need to obtain the wiring diagram and check the continuity of each wire that connects to the battery ECU, especially those that connect between that ECU and the hybrid vehicle ECU.

    My Prius is at the Toyota Dealer im going in a min to pick it up, still broke.

    I have a spare 01 Prius battery core.

    I have taken it apart and I took all the sensing wires off it.

    Now that I have them off how many ohms should I be getting from wire to wire?

    I have a Craftsman autoranging multimeter 82139 is that what I need to figure this out?

    How do I upload picktures to show you guys what im up to?

    Measure continuity from one end of the sense wire to the other end of the same wire. The resistance should be less than one ohm. (First, short the two multimeter test leads together to see what the resistance measurement is. If greater than 0.0 ohms, note the value and call that the baseline reading. The true resistance across the sense wire will be whatever you measure minus this baseline.)

    The autoranging feature sounds like you have a decent meter. I do not know the Craftsman line as I use Fluke.

    Another dealer replaced the battery under warranty.

    Same problem and trouble codes. Aparently the old battery and new battery were fine. Is there any way to check the BATTERY ECU? I think this is the problem. I have replaced it with a few salvage Ecus. any ideas?

    After several months, the dealer has said they think they can fix it. They have aparently checked "everything" and are quite stumped. The service writer says that a guy from Toyota is coming in the next week to figure it out. The service writer mentioned something about the battery case having a short in it. He seemed to think that the guy coming from Toyota knew something or had a fix for the problem. They acted like it was a rare problem that they had come across before and knew how to fix. It should be ready by Feb 10th. Ill keep you posted.

    After months at the dealer, they recomended replacing the transmission.

    I did that.

    The car has a new traction battery, inverter, battery cables, HV ecu and battery ecu.

    I still have P3030 and P3001.

    Unfortunately, in retrospect you would have been better off towing your car to the salvage yard when its problems first started - rather than putting so much money, time and effort into it.

    Regardless of the DTC that is being logged, can the car be driven? Please describe the driveability symptoms that the car demonstrates with all of the new parts that have been installed.

    Also, did you ever measure the resistance of each sense wire to verify that none are broken? That needs to be done, given the DTC that you posted.

    Have you considered taking your car to Taylor Automotive in Sanford? It is pretty clear at this point that your Toyota dealer has failed completely.

    I think you have a wiring problem, given P3030.

    I agree, I wish I had trashed it in the begining. I checked the sense wires and the dealer checked them. I have not checked them since they changed out the battery again (a few months ago), but I am going to.

    The car is driveable. The ICE runs constantly. When sitting the car shakes every couple min. It feels as though the generator turns on for a couple min and off for a couple min because the car rocks/shakes. It has more power since the new trans was put in. Forward and reverse work as you would expect. While the car is moving the car drives like a normal prius except the mpg never gets over 28 I would assume because the ICE never shuts off.

    colonel570 I believe the 3030 code (open hv buss) is more of a generic error code meaning there is notenough power getting from the high voltage battery to the inverter. This can be caused by half of a dozen things from one or more bad battery modules.Bad main relay and or contacts within the battery module.Only precharge relay is operating and not the main relay both located within hv battery box Dirty battery buss connections within the battery module.or discharged high voltage battery.Have the precharge and main power relays within the battery box been changed at the time when a new or used hv batterys were installed?I would assume these relays come new with a new battery module purchase. But I dont know for sure?If you are using orignal relays that could be the problem (high restance source causing error code 3030). Since you have replaced everything and somethings twice.About the only thing left is the hv cables running from the hv battery to the inverter.I'm thinking the car bottomed out some time or large rock impacted the hv cable housing and cables themself, exposing the copper conductor and moisture eventually has eaten or cooroaded the copper conductor away leaving a higher resistance in the cable. There seems to be enough power to crank over the gasoline engine but not enough power after thatto run the accessories and charge the 12volt battery without the gas engine restarting to charge up the high voltage battery.The engine at a stop light runs for 5 seconds thinks the hv battery is charged due to high voltage caused by large resistance between inverter/generator1 and the hv battery, then gas engine shuts off.Seconds later the large resistance somewhere causes immediate voltage drop, makeing the system think the hv battery needs charging, engine starts up and keeps cycling off and on due to to large of restance between hv battery and inverter.I would definately focus on the 3030 code for resolution of your problem.If you should find damaged cables underneath the car. Dont touch them till 5 or 10 minutes after removing the high voltage service plug.Did you notice steady mileage loss months/years prior the problem. Indicating detereation ofof high voltage cables possibly from rock dammage or car bottoming out?Have you noticed anythink different (weak sounding) with the engine cranking over from low voltage due to high restance in hv cable. Has the regenerative braking gotten weaker do to high resistance in hv cable?My gen two prius can be put into neutral immediately after ignition ready mode, keeping the gas engine from starting. If your gen one prius does the same. Take voltage reading at the hv battery while in ready mode engine off.My gen two prius with 28 battery modules at approximately 62% charged has 232volts as read by a scan-guageII pluged into diagnostic port.by My calculations your gen one prius with 38 battery modules should be 314 volts at 62% charged (six green bars)So you should see about 290-313 volts at 50 to 60% charged. If you measure hv battery withcar in ready mode, gas engine off anything less than 270volts you have either dead hv battery or high resistance at the relay contacts within battery case (or both dead batt and contacts).If battery voltage is around 290-313 volts while in ready mode gas engine off (car in neutral).Then the high resistance your looking for is most likely in the hv cables (orange wires) betweenhv battery and inverter.What is your experience using a voltmeter if you have years of experience, make the measurements.If your new with voltmeter or nervous around 300volts (it can kill you) get an experienced personto make measurements for you. and have him read my post..If your are a good seasoned voltmeter operator take readings (hv battery) with car in ready mode engine off.and take readings again after car has been turned off for 10 minutes or more.And post the voltage readings for us.

    Persistent P3001 and P3030 diagnostic trouble codes:

    Hello PriusChat members. I am a new PriusChat member and a new owner of a 2001 Prius.

    I recently purchased this car from member “colonel570†as seen in previous posts, and after much diagnostic s and research, I am resorting to the experts here on Prius chat.

    If you follow along with previous posts, you will find that quite a bit of effort and money has been spent to solve this problem to no avail.

    I have had the codes read again and the battery bank voltages monitored again as well. It seems that with the key on, the systems looks normal with normal voltages to each battery bank and no trouble codes produced. After turning the key to start, the engine immediately starts and the warning triangle cuts on after a few seconds. During this time, the monitored battery voltages go to zero and DTC P3001 and P3030 are produced.

    If I clear the codes and start the car, (the ICE always immediately starts), then immediately put the car in neutral, the trouble codes will not be generated. When put in drive the turtle light comes on for a few seconds then goes off as the warning triangle and DTC’s are generated.

    With MG1 disconnected and the car in ready mode, it will not generate P3001 or P3030 codes.

    With the car in ready mode, ICE running, I have measured voltages at the inverter at a maximum of 310V.

    With the car warmed up, in reverse, ICE off, and under heavy reverse acceleration, the lowest measured voltage is 268V at the inverter.

    Once the car is warmed up, the engine will momentarily cut off and immediately start back up when the car is in drive. In reverse, the cycle is the same except it will stay shut off for a longer period of time.

    If I leave the car in reverse long enough, the car will begin to shudder and DTC P3115 will be generated.

    Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

    Did this car ever make it to Taylor's?

    All appearances are of a wiring problem, perhaps also with the system main relays. You need to check all connections for high resistance.
