Girl hit my bumper

Yesterday, a young girl hit my rear bumper while my car was parked (I guess my car jumped out in front of her, or something). Not a lot of damage, but she scraped the corner of my rear bumper with about 3-4 feet of the side of her car. Much more damage to her car than mine.

Does anybody have much experience on what her insurance carrier will say regarding repairing/replacing my bumper? I'm not sure whether my bumper is cracked or not. I couldn't see behind the bumper. But by scraping the corner of my bumper, she could have worn the bumper down to almost nothing. I just can't tell.

Basically, my question is whether her insurance carrier will say to fix it or to replace it. Any ideas on the costs for both? I believe I read here that to replace the bumper will cost about $300.00. Correct? What's the cost to fix it (probably just some Bondo and paint)?

I know I'll have to get an estimate, but thought I should have some number in my head before I go.

    Thanks all.

Under the bumper cover it is filled with styrofoam. If the foam is crushed it may not show on the outside at all. If the inside foam is crushed it would decrease the bumpers ability to absorb an impact and you might be able to demand a replacement rather than a simple bondo repair. I don't think you can assess the damage until the bumper cover is removed. I think the repairs, if you replace the bumper, will run over $1,000.

If it is just a scrape on the corner, the insurance company is only going to pay to repair the bumper and spot paint that section.

I guess I'll have to let the pros take the bumper off. I didn't think it would be that much of a problem to look at the damage, but once I tried to look under there, I knew it would be a problem.

But are you serious about the $1,000? Yikes.

    Thanks.

I didn't want to overstate the damage. A big chunk of the bumper is gone, so it wasn't just a glancing blow. If she would have stopped immediately upon hitting my car, there would probably be so little damage, that you couldn't tell.

But it also wasn't a direct hit so I can't see any cracks.

Personally, I don't think there is any damage behind the bumper.

Any idea on the cost just to repair the bumper and paint? Am I entitled to have the entire bumper painted?

    Thanks again.

If there are big chunks missing from the bumper then I would guess (without seeing the bumper) that the repair time would come close to or exceed the cost of a new bumper. That's if it is repairable, at all. In that case they would probably just pay for an aftermarket bumper and refinishing the entire bumper.

The bumpers are plastic coated, so that portion will have to be replaced rather than repaired. I'm assuming any metal can be hammered out, and painted. Maybe you need to post a pic or two if you want PC advice.

Standard procedure is to paint an entire panel so the color blends in. So, they should paint the entire bumper.

She hit you, your insurance cmpany goes after hers and HER insurance pays.... they supply you with rental car, no deductable, you live in Cal so YOU get to choose where to get the work done.
If you are in Burbank Glendale area the shop to go to is Classic Collision on Riverside. When my 08 was side swiped, they really took care of it!

Normally, yes. Once I get the estimate, I'll know a lot better. But her insurance is still trying to get ahold of her to determine liability. I don't think it will be much of an issue, but there's still a procedure.

My problem is that my deductible is $500.00. I can go through my insurance company, but will still have to pay the deductible and my insurance company will then go after her insurance company.

If the damage is under $500, seems like a huge waste of time. If it's over, then I have options. That's why I was wondering what people thought the cost would be to replace and/or repair.

I hope to go to the body shop for the estimate tomorrow, but it will probably be after the 3-day weekend.

I think this depends on the company.

Also, you're better off sorting through your own insurer's list of in-network repair shops and finding the best of the bunch and having the vehicle repaired there. It will greatly accelerate the repair process and if the repair is done poorly, both the shop and your insurer is on the hook.

One of my daughters has a 2006 Prius. Similar thing happened to her; tore up the front bumper cover [Are you aware that whether the problem is actually the bumper or the bumper cover?]
Cost was going to be $1000 to fix it; she had $500 deductible. I thought I could fix it for less. So, I bought a front bumper cover on-line, plus paint and some other items. Cost came to around $500.

If I were to do it again, I would definitely get the supplier to paint the bumper cover, since they could do a much better job than I. The extra cost for them to paint it would have been $150, which would have been mostly offset by the $100 I paid just for paint.

Keep in mind that the cost of automobile repairs has skyrocketed in the past 10 years or so. Ain't nothing cheap anymore.

They sand the bumper down, fill in any gaps, sand it again, and repaint the whole thing. Typical cost is $300-500. Mine was tapped in the parking lot once and I never saw who did it, but it's not too noticeable so I never got it fixed.

I'll bet you a beer it's no less than $1200.00 That would be also including car rental for the 3 to 5 days your car will be in the shop! Nothing is cheap to redo on the Prius. Just to match paint on the entire drivers side cost about 2500.00....Just make sure it's a competent shop! I will be interested in the results!

Are we talking about the bumper or the bumper cover? The bumper cover is the painted plastic piece that hides the bumper.

I had my bumper cover replaced on my 2006 and it cost $500 once you included paint and labor. If the bumper itself is involved the costs will easily top $1,000.

If she hit you, her insurance should cover the whole cost. You should not have to worry about the deductible unless you hit something. How about a picture.

    I'm confused.....
    She hit you---right?

    She pays.
    Everything.
At least that's how it works in this part of the world.
    Was there a police report?

The only real problem is that once your VIN number gets the work "accident" attached to it, your car's retail value takes a bit of a ding, but other than that you should be able to take your car to a reputable dealer, get it fixed, and get on with your life.

    Good Luck!

First, my mistake in saying it's the bumper. It's only the bumper cover. Sorry for the error.

The girl hit me. But the insurance wheels roll slowly.

At the moment, I made no claim to my insurance company and the girl's insurance company "probably" won't do much if the damage is low. If the damage goes beyond $500 (I believe), then documents will probably be filed with the DMV. Then it will be a matter of record.

My possible remedy is to have my insurance company handle fixing my car and let them deal with the girl's insurance company. But that makes me make a claim with my insurance company, which I'm trying to avoid. The reason to make the claim to my insurance company is so I will have my car fixed much faster.

Normally, the girl's insurance company pays everything. However, if my insurance company handles the claim, it will require me to pay the deductible. I will get reimbursed when the girl's insurance company pays. If the process works quickly, I understand that I might not have to pay the deductible as the girl's insurance will already have paid the claim. But I think that's a longshot.

No police report as this was on private property and too little damage. Generally, LAPD won't come around unless somebody is bleeding in the middle of the street.

I would surely like a shot at fixing it myself, just for the fun of it.

You've all been great. Thanks for the info. I'm feeling much more confident as to what I will expect. I didn't get to the body shop today, which means I won't get there until next Wednesday. I'll get some pictures of the damage (again, it ain't much) but I'm not too confident (or competent) on the procedure to put those pictures on these boards. We'll see.

Look, you are chewing on this too much. Get the estimates and go to your insurance company. Let them handle it. If you wait for the girl's ins co to come forward, Hell will freeze over.
