If I'm leaving my car at a Toyota dealership to be serviced and I won't be there to after hours how can I get my key. Is there a way to lock the car and have your key inside?

Yes. Just lock it with the mechanical key.

I don't want to sound stupid but, "how does the little key start the car if the dealership has to move it to the garage area. I've never done this before and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
    thank you.

I believe that little key only unlocks the door so you can gain access to the FOB and start the car.

What confuses me is how does the dealership lock the car if the FOB is in the car?

This seems like something the dealership can help you with?
Call your service adviser and ask them! Let us know what they say.

If you prepay (or pay by credit card over the phone ) or have a free service, they can lock the key in your car (using the door lock buttons on the door), and you can pick it up, using the other key. You do have two right?

It is not actually an acronym, it is the electronic key you carry around in your pocket.

    Hey Johnny,

Here's what I would do. Bring some aluminum foil with you to the dealer. When you drop off the car, take the mechanical key out of the FOB (the plastic, electronic black key you carry with buttons on it) so that you keep the mechanical key while they work on the car. To remove it, just slide over the switch on top of the FOB and pull out on the side section. Again, don't give the old fashioned key to the dealer, keep it.

Then only give the dealer the FOB part of the key with the aluminum foil. Ask them to lock your car when finished by wrapping the FOB in aluminum foil and putting it somewhere like the glove or center compartment. The car won't detect it that way (just cause of the foil, other location is just so you can find it when you get in!).

When you come back afterhours, car is successfully locked, and you can open the driver's door with your mechanical key, unwrap the FOB from its foil, and voilà, you can start the car as normal.

I do have 2 keys. I thought you couldn't leave the key in the car because it could drain the battery. I thought I read that in this forum for newbies

I don't think it will make much difference for just a couple of hours. I've left my keys in the car without thinking (in my purse overnight). Mike's idea is a good one - to wrap the fob in foil, so if someone breaks in, the car can't easily be stolen.

Grammar nit: it's not "FOB", it's "fob". Go look it up.
