What is the difference between...

    a generation II and a generation III? I have a Silver 2011 and I don't know what it is, other than one great car and I love driving it. So far my collective fuel economy for 3500 miles is 48.4mpg.

    If this is a dumb post, I hope you will humor my request, but I just don't know.

    I found the answer, 2010 and up is Gen III. But I have a 2011 Model II. That is what confused me.

    You have a G3. Or a Generation Three.
    They're the 10's, 11's, and (soon to be) 12's.

    There are 4-1/2 trim levels for the G3:
    II, III, IV, and V.

    There's a "I" that's supposed to be a "Fleet Only" vehicle that's a stripped down version of the G3-II, but they're like unicorns and the Plug In Hybrids (PHV).
    Everybody knows what they look like, and "some" people have seen them, but they're not what you would call 'common'.

    Welcome aboard and enjoy your Prius.

    I purchased a 2011/Three only two and a half months ago and I had to go digging through my paperwork to find out what I had purchased after I got home.

    From this site I had already established that I had a Gen III but I had no clue as to what model I had purchased.

    From my experiences on this site, there are a great many things to learn about your new Prius but the most important thing is to enjoy your Prius while doing so.

    And for 2011, they change the naming of the sub-models from roman numerals. For example, I have a 2010 Prius V, but the equivalent 2011 model is called a Prius Five. So the OP actually has a Prius Two.

    Gen 2 has McPherson struts in the rear, gen 3 doesn't
    Gen 2 has a 1.5motor, gen 3 is 1.8
    I bet there are a thousand differences

    Yeah....I was going to mention that, but the OP is fairly new, and it would have involved a 500-word dissertation on the difference between Roman and Arabic numerals, and sparked a heated debate on the difference between capitalizations (is it Two, TWO, or two?) and the social acceptance of just using an Arabic numeral, along with a historical mention of the Prius v (station wagon) which, like the PHV I still haven’t seen yet.
    THEN a disgruntled V...or v...or Five....or 5 owner would have been offended somehow, and that would have sparked another 200 post blue-on-blue fight on how the "lesser" Prius owners are just jealous.

    Who needs all that?

    But yes.....you are correct....Roman numerals are now passe.

    Toyota calls the 2010+ the '3rd generation' Prius (at least in my 2010 print brochure). I just call it 3rd gen.

    Gen III is too confusing with the trim numbers Two - Five which used to be II - V

    Look up everybody:rolleyes:. The heading of this forum is still "Gen III." And when asked, I still own a Gen III--Prius IV. Cripes!

    Yep, Toyota did. Everyone should out the words instead of using Roman numerals when describing the various trim levels of the 3rd gen. It helps avoid confusing between the Five vs. the soon to be released Prius v wagon.

    Thanks everyone, I am now enlightened. I am a long time Toyota owner, but this is my first Prius. BTW, I also have a 2009 Camry Hybrid and it has been great.
