2010 - Help! Disabling Reverse Beep

What am I doing wrong? Connected elm5, ran JerryLoz program, changed seat belt beep enable to disable but still have beep.

Ok I guess it is disabled, just not the initial startup beeps.

 

Right. Just simply change the settings to "disable" and no more beeps. What does people usually use ELM5 scanner for? Diagnostic?

Dealer did it in 30 min and for free. I'm back to being a sane person.

 

I just wanted to thank JerryLoz for the great utility, and to encourage others to try this. My dealer said they would have no problem doing this for me for free, but I figured what's $35 for a tool I can use with any modern car (and I could learn some new things while I was at it). Here's what I did:

1. Found the OBD port on the car below the steering wheel (thanks Google). Connected ElmScan 5 to OBD port.

2. Installed CD and installed drivers from the CD as instructed by the included directions.

3. Connected USB end of ElmScan 5 to USB port on laptop. Waited for drivers to correctly associate with device.

4. Once Windows informed me that the device was successfully installed I installed the software as instructed. Loaded software and it found I had 2 COM ports - COM4 was already used (serial port) so the ElmScan 5 device seated itself on COM6.

5. Closed software and loaded JerryLoz's utility. Once I connected it affirmed my seatbelt and reverse beeps were ENABLED. I disabled them and closed the unit; then I launched it again to ensure the setting stuck at DISABLED. It did, so I disconnected everything. Turning on the car reminded me that silence is GOLDEN. Thanks again JerryLoz.

This process sounds more complicated than it really is (my wife was right there next to me during the ordeal and she found it rather painless as well). This was performed with a 5-year old laptop with Windows 7 32-bit edition.

 

Dealer disabled mine at the 5,000 mile service visit.....no chargem

 

Ah, sweet silence. Ran by the dealership yesterday, they had the car 9 minutes. They turned the reverse into a single beep and disabled the beep for the front passenger seat belt. I often set a heavy bag or box and hate the alarm going off when I hit a bump. They were not able to stop the driver seat belt beep, but it waits til 12 mph to sound..

 

anyone know if this will work on a gen II? i completed it successfully on my gen III, and have a friend that wants to try it on his '08.

 

Yes it can, and it can be done without any connection to the ODB. There is a little "dance" you go through using various buttons. I don't have a link to the instructions anymore since I sold my Gen2, but I'm sure people in the Gen2 forums can help.

I tried your program with a different EBD2 that I originally purchased for my Triumph motorcycle. Your program simply gives a "cannot find ELM..." (or similar). Any chance you (or anyone else) can post the exact hyperterminal commands for disabling the reverse & seatbelt beeps?

Great thread. In our manual, the chime settings are under Section 6-2, "Customization". Door lock settings on pg. 589, reverse and seat belt on pg. 592. Talked with the dealership salesmen a few weeks ago (before I knew about this thread) and they gave me the usual "oh, those are safety features, you don't want to turn them off" but it was clear that none of them were really up on the subject.

 

First guess is that your ELM device shows up on a different COM port. I have several devices, one shows up as COM3 and the other as COM7. The next guess is that there is a baud rate mismatch. The default is 38,400, but the ELM remembers the last speed it was set to.

You may want to look at post 170 in http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...scussion/64406-scangaugeii-work-2010-a-5.html . It shows the basic ELM commands, as well as a link to ELM documentation. Most of the thread is about using the ScanGauge, but you can do the same things with an ELM.

 

Seatbelt and Reverse Beep (Consolidated Instructions)


Although there are a couple threads out there already, I spent hours searching through them to find the answers I needed. Thus, wanted to post this "consolidated" set of instructions. I take no credit for the original research here, only the time spent searching for the best nuggets.

The most extensive discussion is in this thread: "ScanGaugeII work on 2010" (sorry, can't post link because I am too new here). Personally, I gained the most insight into this process from "adrainblack" in post # 170. Thanks to RobH for helping me find that post.

Additionally, JerryLoz has posted a downloadable program to help with this process. I couldn't make it work for myself, but others have reported success with the program. That program can be found in post # 175 of this thread: "2010 - Help! Disable Reverse Beep".

Ok - so here's how I was able to disable both the annoying seatbelt beep and the dangerous (in my humble opinion) reverse beep.

First - find yourself an ELM OBDii cable. I found an ELM327 on ebay for about $20.

Second - follow these instructions (created by adrianblack and adapted by me for this post)

This will get you started with any ELM327 1.3 compatible device:

1. Download and use "PUTTY" to connect to COM3 @ 38400 bps. (Check device manager for new COM port assignment for ELM327 device, it may be different for you.)
2. Push enter when connected and you should see > which is the normal prompt. All commands on the ELM start with AT. When the command is accepted, you get a OK. If it

does not understand the command, you will see a ?. Please note you cannot use backspace while entering a command as it will always give a ?.
3. If you don't see the prompt, check your COM port setting, make sure you are 38400bps and lastly, type AT E1 (Echo on -- should already be set). Please note you MUST

be connected to your laptop AND the car with it turned on for the ELM to respond at all.

Enter the commands shown at 4-8 below:
4. AT H1 (Headers on)
5. AT L1 (Line feeds on)
6. AT SP 6 (Set protocol to CAN 11bit/500kbps)
7. AT DP (show you current protocol)
8. AT CAF1 (enable auto formatting)

Now, you need to tell the ELM which ECU you want to talk to:
AT SH 07C0 (this tells the ELM you are wanting to talk to ECU 7C0, which is the combination meter.)

Now, at the > prompt, type: 21 ac

Should return a response with "00" at the end if reverse beep is enabled or "40" if it is disabled.

To Change...
At > prompt type 3b ac 40 to set single beep.
Send the 21 ac query command above to see the new answerback.

Now, at the > prompt, type: 21 a7

Should return a response with "co" at the end if seatbelt beep is enabled or "00" if it is disabled.

To Change...
At > prompt type 3b a7 00 to disable beep.
Send the 21 a7 query command above to see the new answerback.

If you are looking at the SGII XGAUGE sheet, you can send those commands like this:

Example:
TXD = 07E2217D
1. So you type AT SH 7E2 to set the ECU ID to 7E2, which is the air conditioning ECU. (You drop the first 0)
2. Now, you type in the command, which are the bytes that follow the ID -- so 217D in this case.
3. The Car will return an answer where one byte shows what the actual power usage.
4. Understanding the answer is more complicated since you often have to look at the right byte or bytes, and then apply math and conversions to it to get it into the right human readable format.

 

Toyota HQ emailed us, asking for feedback about our new car. I complained about some of the salesmen blowing me off when I asked about disabling the annoying backup, passenger seat belt, and passenger door alarms. A few weeks later the dealership calls and says "bring it in".

They set reverse to one beep, & turned off the other two. The guy who did it was very nice about it. Absolutely no hassles. I'm a happy camper now.

This was I-5 Toyota in SW Washington, BTW.

Glad I found this thread. I was able to adjust these settings on my 2008, "Hal". I put a deposit on a Pearl White 2011 for My Bride on Saturday. Will tell the salesperson that my wife and I are competent adults, and that the reverse beeper is to be set to "once" and and seatbelt beepers are to be set "off" before we will accept delivery. Thanks, guys!

You must have entered a "AT SH 7e8", which is the wrong ECU. Try entering "AT SH 7c0", and then the "21 ac".
